[ORIGINAL CHAPTER]
Herrmann was discharged after a few weeks, which disappointed me since I had spent a lot of time caring for him and sitting with him while his family wasn't around, and now I'd have to find something else to do. I hadn't cared in a long time, largely because I'd discovered that my mother had lied to me about my father; I'd spent years assuming he was dead, only to discover he was a dirty cop with the Chicago Police Department. However, he had no idea I existed, and based on his reputation, I didn't want to know him.
Maggie shouted my name from the desk while I was seeing a patient in a cubicle, "Jordan, you have someone coming to see you." Maggie exclaimed, "I'm just finishing up with this patient and I'll be there" as I finished suturing up my patient's hand after he had come into the ER with a large gash to his left hand, he was what we called a frequent flyer in the medical profession, which meant they got the medical treatment they needed but never paid. This man had gone to our ER so many times that we nicknamed him Jim because he refused to tell us his true name for fear of having to foot the cost.
As I finished the sutures, I set the instruments down before looking at Jim, "your all good to go make sure you keep it clean and change the bandages often" I said sternly because I had dealt with Jim on several occasions, including him returning with infected wounds "yes doc" Jim said as he sat up "I mean it I don't want you coming back in a few days with your hand infected again" I said sternly as he nodded before standing up from my chair and walked to the door, where I removed my gloves and threw them away.
As I approached Maggie, I spotted someone standing at the desk. At first, I didn't recognise who it was until I came closer and saw the firefighter uniform. It was Herrmann, but I wasn't sure why he was here. "You must be Dr Jordan," Herrmann said with a smile. "I am, and I hope you haven't ruined Dr. Rhodes' hard work," I said as I set my clipboard down on the counter before Maggie snatched it. "I promise I've been a good boy, but I also heard it wasn't only Dr Rhodes," Herrmann replied, a sly grin on his face.
"I didn't do much," I said, embarrassed and nervously, looking down at my feet, which were tapping nervously against the floor. I wasn't sure why his presence made me nervous, but I had to act normal. "Sitting by someone's bedside, even on their time off is a lot," Herrmann said, i began to feel annoyed because Dr Rhodes must have been speaking to him. "Dr Rhodes really doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut," I said, my lips clenched.
"It wasn't Dr Rhodes I woke up one morning to find you fast sleeping," Herrmann said, a wide grin on his face. "You snore by the way," Herrmann said, making me chuckle and making the discussion less awkward. "Dually noted," I added sarcastically, making him laugh. As we spent a moment smiling at each other before Herman's phone went off in his pocket causing him to reach and take it out before looking at the screen "I've gotta go but come by Molly's free drinks all night" Herrmann said "Its nice to properly meet you Melisa" Herrmann said as he began to run off "Hey how do you know my name" i asked which caused him to turn around and grin before running through the doors of the ER leaving me smiling but not for long.
After the ER had settled down, I went on the lookout for Dr. Rhodes, who had some explaining to do. "Hey Dr. Rhodes," I said, standing there with my fists on my hips as he turned around, "I don't need anybody setting me up Connor," I continued, leading him to close his file and smile, "you've been here for three years and haven't dated a single person." Connor replied as he stared at me. "How would you know we've only been friends a few of weeks," I answered, prompting a large grin on his face, which could only mean one thing: "Maggie," I said, causing him to chuckle a little, "if I'm coming to Molly's tonight, so are you." I said glaring at him before walking away.
Molly's was a pub owned by Herrmann and a few of his buddies that was generally known as a hangout for Chicago's first responders, but I had never attended. Later that night, I returned home, took a shower, and decided on an outfit for tonight. As I was getting ready, I heard a knock at the door, so I set my earrings on the counter before walking over to the door and looking through the peep hole to see Connor standing there, so I removed the latch and opened the door, saying "I'm glad to see you came" as I walked back over to the counter as Connor walked in, closing the door behind him.
"So Maggie told me how everything went down," Connor began, making me sigh since I already knew what was about to happen. "I don't need a boyfriend Connor, you're plenty to keep me on my toes," I added, making him laugh. As I put my earrings on and had a drink of my beer off the counter. "Herrmann is a fantastic guy," Connor stated as he zipped up my top. "He's a little older than you, but I believe he'll be good for you." Connor said.
"Let's go," I said as we went together from my flat to Molly's pub. We heard applause when we opened the doors. "Hey, it was the doctors who saved Herrmann's life," one guy said as he approached us at the pub and shook our hands. Another guy replied, "Yeah, now we're stuck with him." causing everyone to chuckle "Hi, my name is Otis," he added as he extended his hand to shake mine.
Mellissa" i said smiling at him "Connor" Connor said as he sat down and took off his jacket. "Well you guys have free drinks tonight so what do you want to start with" Otis asked as I looked at Rhodes "beer for me and Rhodes" I said as Otis smiled "on it" Otis said as he went to get the beers "hey" Herrmann said as he walked over to where me and Connor were sat at the bar "I'm glad you guys came" Herrmann said as he shook Connors hand "thanks" Connor said as Otis placed a beer in front of both before walking away "so how long you been working at Med" Herrmann asked "3 years moved back here for a fresh start" I said as I took a sip of my beer "you moved back you were born in Chicago" Herrmann said seeming interested in me "yeah" I said grinning at him.
