You stared at the gruesome scene before you. The corpse of a man lay on the ground in the center of an empty garage. His face was twisted agony, and his eyes looked ready to pop. The man's limbs were contorted in painful positions. A large chunk of his neck was also missing. You gagged at the sight.
"Okay, rookie. Victim here is a man named Alex Meredith. He's been reported missing for three days. Local farmer found him. What can you tell me?" A voice came from behind you.
Looking back, you saw one of the senior forensic scientists watching you. His eyes twitched in anticipation. Turning your attention back to the dead man, you crouched down. You quickly analyzed the man once more. Rolling up the hemmed ends of the pants, you saw large bruise marks.
"Right here are large bruise marks. It's not one thin line, nor are they any signs of friction burns. So, a rope is out of the question. If you count the marks, there are five on each leg. It looks like someone tried to dislocate his legs with pure force before breaking them. However, there are no breakages in the skin. The person could have been wearing gloves or had no fingernails."
You looked back to your boss who nodded in encouragement. Quickly, you moved to the torso. Your eyebrows furrowed as rolled the sleeves up. You almost did a double take.
"The same marks are on his wrists," you muttered. "This isn't right."
Then you spotted something out of the corner of your eye. You rushed from the spot off the floor and grabbed a pair of forceps. Sitting in front of the neck wound, you avoided getting blood on your jeans. Gently, you inserted the tool into the corpse's neck. A small spurt of blood shoot out, and you recoiled in surprise. Tucking a lose hair from your ponytail, you attempted to focus once again.
"Officer Jones," you called out. "Could you come over here?"
Several heavy footsteps sounded from behind you.
"What do you need rookie?" A ruff voiced demanded. You rolled you eyes at the new nickname you seemed to have earned.
"Shine your flashlight right there."
He let out a huff and said a quick thanks. Several rustles of fabric later, a light shined onto the body. With it, you could the wound much better. You grimaced as you searched through the torn flesh. Suddenly, a white object peeked through the tissue. Pulling the muscle away with your gloves hands, the forceps dug at it. You slowly removed item only to discover it was a tooth. A human canine to be exact. You turned around towards Officer Jones.
"Holy shit," he uttered.
You nodded you head in agreement. Turning to your boss, he already had an evidence bag ready. Gingerly, you placed the tooth in it. You glanced back at dead body.
"It seems impossible. The bruises indicate that it wasn't an animal attack, but no human has that much strength," you continued.
"How many people?" He asked.
"Just one. The tracks from the doorway suggest only one person was following him."
"Premeditated or Manslaughter?"
"Manslaughter. The marks on the body were made rather quickly."
"How long has our victim been dead?"
"Less than 24 hours. Much of the blood hasn't dried yet, and there were no signs of insect eggs in the neck wound," you stated as you took off the surgical gloves. You received a harsh pat on the back and faltered forward several steps.
