Just as I finish my lipgloss, there's a soft knock on the door.
"Your ride is here," David's mom says with a smile on her face as she comes in the room. She takes in my appearance, and suddenly has tears in her eyes.
"Oh honey, you look so gorgeous," She gushes before pulling me into a hug.
"Thank you. What does he have planned?" I ask, hoping to get it out of her.
"Now that's a secret," She says before winking and heading downstairs.
As I head down, Toby whistles at me, which makes me laugh and Sarah and Esther run up to give me a hug.
I see Ilya also standing in the living room, dressed up in a button down and khaki's.
Okay seriously what the frick is going on and how did David get him to dress up?
"Ilya?" I say giving him a hug.
"Nat you look hot," He says and I laugh.
"C'mon my lady," He offers me my hand, and I wave a quick goodbye to David's family.
He leads me out toward a Cadillac Escalade, a car that Ilya definitely does not own.
Must be rented.
He opens the door for me, and I hop in.
I don't even bother trying to get out of him where we're going, because I know there's no hope in getting it out of him.
We pull over on the side of the road and I go to ask Ilya why, but he jumps out of the car before I can ask.
He comes over next to me and puts a blindfold over my eyes, and I get nervous. I know David.
"What's going on?" I ask.
"Oh stop. We're not there yet. You just can't see what's going on," He says and I hear him get back into the driver's seat.
It felt like an hour until we got to the final destination but in reality, it was probably only a few minutes.
Ilya helps me out of the car and leads me to somewhere. All I know is we're outside, and I feel rocks and grass below my feet. My heels kept sinking into the ground.
I don't hear anyone talking or any noise, but I'm just worried I'm about to be pushed off of a cliff.
Hands reach for the blindfold, and I come face to face with David, who is wearing a wide smile on his face. I see the nervousness on his face, but he's trying to hide it.
Nice try, David.
Behind him, I see Chicago in the distance, and I'm in awe. I never knew we had a view like this of Chicago.
"Hi, Natalie," He breaths out.
"Hi David," I turn around to look for Ilya and see him holding a camera but tries to hide it when I turn around to look at him.
"I'm sure you're wondering what you're doing here," He says and I nod slowly.
"Well, Natalie, we've known each other for a while, and have been through everything together," "Stupid high school crushes, drama, life," He says and I can't help but smile at the memories that come to mind.
"And then you moved out to LA with me to work for me, and it was the best thing I've done," I have to agree it was definitely the best decision I've made. A lot has definitely changed because of that decision though.
I've lost a lot of trust in my parents. Got out of what I learned to be a toxic relationship.
Made a huge new group of friends.
Gotten a social media presence.
And finally got the love of my life.
I can't help but think about how different my life would be had I stayed in Chicago like I originally wanted to.
"We started dating, finally, and I fell so deeply in love with you," I hear Ilya start to move the camera behind us.
"Natalie, you are the best thing that could ever happen to my life. I don't know what I'd do without you,"
All of a sudden David drops down on a knee and pulls out a beautiful ring. "Natalie Mariduena, will you marry me?"
No fucking way. I'm not saying no to him, but holy wow I didn't see this coming!
But it all suddenly starts to make sense. The weird looks from David's family.
Sneaking around.
Him acting nervous.
I didn't realize I was lost in my own thoughts when I see him start to look upset, as though he thought I wasn't interested. "Oh my god of course David!" I yell and he picks me up and twirls me around. I can't help but laugh as tears start to form in my eyes.
I haven't been this happy in a while.
