"Rory!"
"Theo!"
Our animals sprint into the fire, shielding us as we also spring in. We went straight to the people in the cages, checking how strong the lock is. Oz pulled on it a few times but it didn't open, even when we both put our weight into it.
"Theo!"
"Wait! Don't try to use him to break the lock."
We both froze at the voice behind us. A girl had ridden with her animal and was running towards us. She pulled out two sticks of metal from her hair and ran next to us, crouching down at the lock.
"If you use your bear to break the lock then the whole cage will fall," The girl in front of us said gesturing at the cage. "Do you hear it? It's weakening by the minute because of the heat."
I looked at Oz and readied Rory to carry people.
When the girl finished picking the lock I ran in, grabbing the farthest person first.
"Get the farthest person, they've been in the smoke the longest. Hurry!" I grabbed a man, and struggled a little bit before Oz grabbed him from me and hauled him out. The girl's wolf was a little too big to fit the cage, so I had Theo, Oz's bear, standing out and Oz out there as the girl and hauled people out. When five people had fit on Theo's back, I asked Oz to leave before the fire spread anymore. He grabbed two more people before jogging out.
"Grab a few more and my leopard and I will get the rest," I coughed out.
"Hurry out." The girl grabbed two people, and went out. She came back in and grabbed two more before she and her black wolf escaped the blaze.
"Alright Rory, let's go." I grabbed two people and plopped them on Rory's back. Rory took one in her mouth and I grabbed the last one. The metal on the cage was groaning. I walked out first, Rory on my heels. She was pushing me to go faster. The first was getting hotter and the smoke was getting warmer. The smoke made me cough out a lot, my eyes were tearing, and I had no idea where to go.
From a distance, Oz was yelling at me to get out now. Rory, still had someone in her mouth, but was nudging me towards Oz's voice. I grunted and kept walking where Rory wanted me to go.
I gasped for air when I made it out. The fire that was in the clearing had spread out to the outline of the trees. I set down the woman that I had carried out before I had a coughing fit. My knees were weak and my eyes were blurry as my body tried to regain control of my lungs.
"Kiki!" Oz engulfed me in a hug. "Are you ok? Are you hurt?"
"Hmm gommh, SUMMPHACET MEH!" I yelled the last words out.
"Sorry, what?" He held me out.
"I said you're gonna SUFFOCATE ME." I coughed a little more, trying to get the soot out.
"Oh, sorry. Are you okay though?" Oz's blue eyes ran up and down me looking for any injuries.
"I'm pretty sure I'm ok," I coughed again. "How is everyone else?"
I glanced behind him and found fifteen people lying on the ground. The girl with her wolf was tending to them, trying to wake them up.
We had ended up far away from the clearing. The wind was blowing away from us, which meant the fire wouldn't spread towards us.
"They're all unconscious. None of them are waking up."
"What have you tried?"
"She's been slapping them and yelling at them to wake up."
