Chapter 25 - Defend the DG - Part 2

Soon the backdoor was barricaded, the stairs were booby trapped and the four children were back upstairs, listening out for the sound of the imminent break in.

At 7.30 on the dot, they heard noise downstairs. The burglars had arrived. The kids split up and went in different directions. 

Sure enough they soon heard the sound of footsteps on the stairs.

Tyler was hiding in the bathroom behind the shower curtain, poised to dart downstairs as soon as the coast was clear. Jody was hiding in Tyler's room and Alex and Sasha crept to the stairs ready to give the burglars a surprise.

The waited silently at the top of the stairs, they heard the whispers and footsteps of the intruders below. Suddenly a torch beam picked out Sasha and Alex in the darkness.

Surprise! Yelled Alex and Sasha and waved down at the four surprised faces.

What you waiting for sort out those kids and start looking for stuff to nick.

But, but...

There's no buts. Just two stupid kids, im sure you lot can handle them growled Kingsley before disappearing into the office.

Kelly, Benjy and Ant headed to the staircase. Benjy was the first one on the steps, he was about half way up the stair case when suddenly he felt his foot slip from under him, he went careering backwards down the stairs taking Kelly and Ant with him, like toppling dominoes.

They started up the stairs more cautiously this time, Ant went in front this time, carefully scanning each step with his torch beam, as they reached the place where Benjy had slipped Ant spotted marbles and toys and began to kick them out of the way to create a safe passage to the top of the staircase.

Kelly was already regretting coming along, the dark house gave her the creeps, but Kingsley said they couldn't switch on any lights in case anyone spotted that they had broken in. Benjy wasn't much better. He even jumped at the sound of the floorboards creaking as he stepped on a loose board.

When the reached the top of the stairs there was no sign of the kids, so they rummaged around the first bedrooms they came to but didn't find much there other than an old ipod and some cheap jewellery. Meanwhile, Tyler had managed to creep past the open bedroom doors and head down stairs and the others were hidden in Tyler's room. Alex hid behind the door, Jody hid in the wardrobe and sasha crouched under the desk, clutching a tube of super glue, hidden from view by the back of the desk chair. She squeezed the super glue all over the chair as she heard footsteps approaching. Kelly had the misfortune of walking into the room. No sooner had she entered, Alex appeared from behind the door. Kelly almost jumped out of her skin, she backed away from Alex and Sasha saw her moment. She pushed the chair towards Kellys legs with all her might, the chair slammed into Kelly's legs and Kelly fell back into the chair in surprise. Before she had a chance to get up, Jody and Alex began to tie her to the chair with gaffa tape. As Kelly struggled she realised that her trousers were now stuck to the chair. By the time they were finished with her, Kelly was trussed up like a turkey and gagged.

One down, two more to go grinned Jody

Ant had disappeared down the hall way and was now approaching the staff bedroom. Sasha and Alex had deliberately put lots of valuables in the room and left the door ajar. Tyler's laptop, a tablet and an open box full of Cand-rose's jewellery were on show in the room. Ant fell for the bait, he flung the door open and found himself showered with red paint, from the bucket that had been conveniently placed above the door.

Benjy laughed from the door.

He dodged passed his paint covered mate and started to collect up the valuables.

Go clean up in the bathroom chuckled Benjy as Ant tried in vain to wipe paint from his face.

I'm not opening any more doors he replied

Don't be daft, why would they booby trap the bathroom, there's no valuables in there.

Fine, if your so sure, you open it

So Benjy opened the door and founded himself showered in pink paint.

Alex, Jody and Sasha crept down the hallway.

What are we gonna do about them whispered Sasha as they peered into the staff bedroom at the two painted sodden burglars. With two of them in there, there was no chance of locking them in the bathroom as originally planned.

Suddenly Alex produced a key from his pocked, quietly closed the bedroom door and locked it.

Where did you get that? Asked Jody astonished.

I liberated it earlier. The staff bedroom is not just the only one with an ensuite, it's the only with a lock on the bedroom door, so I figured it might come in useful tonight to have the key, just in case we didn't get the opportunity to lock the thief in the bathroom. Always best to have a plan B.

Two down, just Kingsley left now.
