"Peaches, you haven't been to school in two days", Riley said loudly as she entered Maya's small bedroom. The lights were oof, but she could could clearly see a lump on the bed.
"That's because I'm incredibly sick, cupcake", Maya answered solemnly. She didn't bother to move, simply staring at the wall before her in disdain. Why couldn't it open up and swallow her whole so she could get away? So she could avoid this topic forever?
"My dad is worried about you. I'm worried about you. Hell, even Lucas is worried about you!", Riley ranted as she flicked on the light. Maya squinted, blinking a few times. She had been sitting in darkness for so King that she almost forgot what the light was like. "He wanted me to tell you that if this is about his choice then he's really sorry."
Ah, Lucas Friar. The root of all evil.
Or at least the root to all of Maya's problems. Everything had been fine until he showed up. Riley fell hard for those damned green eyes. That perfect smile. That light brown hair that was always tussled just right. That Texas accent. She probably would have been all over him like every other girl in their grade was back then.
But Maya Hart did not like boys.
Especially not the tall and muscled sports types. No, she liked girls with puppy dog brown eyes and goofy smiles.
Riley seemed to think that the problem was that Maya liked Lucas as well. Maya knew that wasn't the truth, but she let Riley continue on with the idea, because she didn't want to hurt her. "You can tell Lucas that I stopped caring about that ages ago." And by stopped caring she meant that she never did.
Lucas Friar must have been really
full of himself if he genuinely had
the nerve to think that Maya Hart
was hopelessly in love with him.Maya finally turned away from the red painted to wall to look at Maya. The girl's dark brown hair was curled, but it was nowhere near being neat. Stray strands flew all over the place. "You didn't come all the way to this side of town just because of me being sick", Maya sighed as she pushed herself up. She wished that that were the case. That Riley had come all the way over here just because she was so worried about her poor, sick Maya. The blonde patted the seat next to her, smiling softly. "What's up?"
Riley squealed as she sat down next to her best friend, a goofy grin on her face. Maya's Hart fluttered. She turned her head to stare out the window at one of the many billboards. Don't cough. Don't cough. Don't cough.
"I had my first kiss with Lucas today."
Maya coughed.
