The sun rose over Ninjago City. The birds chirped, barely heard over the crowded streets. Shopkeepers drew the curtains and opened doors, traffic guards makings sure kids got across the road safely on their way to school. Many of them dressed in black gi's. The adults sighed and remembered the time they came to school wearing the same clothes.

The last student crossed the street and the traffic guard followed them, allowing the cars to pass. The guard however couldn't stop a kid from running across the road. She reached out to shout at him to stop but froze. The boy jumped up on one if the cars, flipped off and slid across the hood of another before flying past her. She turned around only to see him already halfway down the block.

The elementary school of Ninjago city was quite large. And today it was decorated for an event. A very special one that almost everyone would be watching, either on television or in person. And that news didn't help the already growing nerves of the kids who were participating.

Every two years the Ninja Academy—the most prestigious ninja school in Ninjago—came to select new students from around Ninjago from elementary and middle schools. Kids in grades six or older could try out, but only a few were selected. The younger kids would do activities and crafts while the older ones attempted to claim a spot. The other year was stored for high schools around Ninjago. Of course not many made it in, as those tryouts were optional.

Today was tryouts, after the summer they would be sent to the academy to train. They were lucky enough not to have rain, instead it was a warm, sunny, May day. Today, the elementary school of Ninjago city was closed, but was still bustling. Kids were rushing to their lockers or classrooms, not wanting to be counted late. Through the mess of black you could see the officials and referees in their clean, white, pressed uniforms, ushering kids into class and barking orders to their coworkers. The warning bell run and the last kids were shoved into class by hall monitors.

The sixth grade class was probably the most excited, as it was their first time getting to try out. After half a hour of trying to calm her class down, the teacher gave up and flopped down onto her chair. She propped her elbows up on her desk and leaned into her hands. She yawned and  pressed the little bell on her desk.

"Fish!"

The enitere class shouted in unison before scrambling to their seats. The teacher sighed and muttered under her breath. "Alright kids, today is tryouts
