Kichiro was fine with his life. His mother was a nice, kind woman with the name Todoroki Rei. His siblings, Touya, Natsuo and Fuyumi were all kind to him as well. Well, until he was 5.

Once his quirk manifested, his father (who'd previously been ignoring him), became more interested and began to train the 5 year old. Kichiro loved this. Why? Well, the training was harsh. And it hurt. But his father liked him when he trained! He'd rather have bruised knuckles than a bruised heart.

His quirk was 'Checkered Flames'. His left side produced black flames, which could easily burn someone to death if not used properly. His right produced white flames, which were a cold temperature and healed wounds. This fascinated Kichiro's father and made him train more harshly. It hurt more and more to use his left side. Black burn marks lined the walls of the training room.

This continued for 3 years. 3 damned years this kid trained with the number two hero. On January 2nd, Kichiro's birthday, all he got was bleeding wounds which he healed himself. In his sleep, white flames enveloped the boy, leaving him unscathed in the morning.

If you're wondering why none of his siblings helped, they're scared of him. They're afraid he'll become like their father. Kichiro knew this and smiled bitterly at the thought. His mother was even worse, she couldn't even be in the same room as him without glaring at the back of his head. He felt it. He knew.

On the 11th, 9 days after Kichiro's birthday, he had a new sibling. His name was Shoto and his father immediately favored him over Kichiro. Shoto's hair was split with both his parents' hair colors, white and red. And he had eyes of grey and blue.

Kichiro's appearance was rather boring compared to his younger brothers. With his fathers red hair and his mothers grey eyes. The only thing weird about his appearance was his eyes being different shades of grey. His left eye was dark, almost black. While his right was a very light grey, the same as his mother.

By the time Shoto got his quirk, Kichiro was 11 and completely cast aside. Everyone loved him. He was... perfect. Kichiro sighed as he looked at his clock.'12:34 am', it read. He turned in his checkered sheets and groaned. He then heard a knock at the door and bolted up. But when he heard Shoto's voice, he calmed slightly.

"Kici-nii?" A small voice called form the other side of the door. "I heard Momma talking, can you come with me?"

Kichiro sighed and moved across the room to open the door. "Why do you need me, Sho? Can't you get Yumi or Natsu?" He asked tiredly, rubbing his eyes.

Shoto gave puppy eyes to his brother. "Pleeaasseee??~" He begged.

"Ugh, sure." Kichiro mumbled, taking his younger brothers hand and leading him to the talking, where his caught a bit of his mother's conversation. "Shoto...his left side. Sometimes I look at him and hate what I see. I...can't raise him anymore. I shouldn't raise him. And Kichiro... he can't turn around without me seeing his father... his quirk is too much like him! Mother! I can't do this."

Shoto heard too and moved into the kitchen. "Mom...?" He asked hesitantly.

Kichiro stepped in too, a sad look on his face. He stood on Sho's left, looking at his scared mother. He knew his mother didn't exactly favor him but hearing it hurt.

Rei turned with a creepy look on her face. In an instant, Kichiro and Shoto felt a burning sensation in two different places. Shoto's left side of his face and Kichi's neck on the right.

'Run!' His instincts screamed and run he did. Into the night. Far away from his screaming brother and crying mother.

He ran and ran and passed out in an alley. Waking up in one piece, he knew he needed medical attention but didn't feel the pain, he felt where the water hit him and only felt a scar. Oh. His quirk. Well, past that. He needs to look different.

A smile came onto his face at an idea he's had since he was 7. He'd dye his hair black and white. Similar to his brother but instead of red, black! His smile grew and he thought... 'This might not be bad...'

That's when Todoroki Kichiro became 'Mr Checkers'.
