There was a bus waiting  around the corner. I quickened my steps in an attempt to catch it but my heels kept sinking into the mud. Tired and frustrated with the sun beating down my back I sank to the ground.

"Excuse me Miss"

I looked up to see a smiling lady in red. I frowned wondering how someone could smile in 43 degrees.

"Are you lost?"

"Ummm.....yea, I..I" I didn't realize how thirsty I had been , I could barely get words out of my mouth.

"You look thirsty, come let me get you something to drink. My house is in that direction." She pointed towards something in the distance that my eyes couldn't make out. I didn't know whether or not I could trust this woman but I wasn't sure when the next bus would arrive and I could really use a glass of water.

It was about a five minute walk to the house. If it could be called a house. It was bigger than any home I'd ever seen and it looked old, like hundreds of years old. The yard was overgrown and unkempt and the paint was peeling off. The inside was pristine in comparison. I sat awkwardly on the edge of a chaise as she brought in a pitcher and a glass.

"Thanks" I mumbled, wondering how soon I could leave without being rude.

"So what brings you to Wicker Hills?"

I frowned again, the woman seemed to have a permanent smile on her face and I wasn't in the mood for small talk.

"I was on my way to a friend's house and got lost."

"Hmm I see, well your welcome to stay as long as you wish. We don't get a lot of visitors here."

"Oh ok , thanks actually..." My words trailed off into a huge yawn. I was suddenly very sleepy. Maybe staying a little longer wouldn't be so bad I thought reclining into the chaise and resting my head on a pillow. I was acutely aware of the lady's movements behind me but my eyes were closing and I couldn't be bothered.

..........................

"She's asleep" Julie whispered into the phone.

"How long will she be gone for?"

" At least four hours."

"Good, we have time."

I had to stay calm, in situations like this panic was a nuisance. The room was quite large with no openings. It seemed like I was somewhere underground. I scanned the room for an escape. There was an iron door to the right of my bed. I wasn't wearing the clothes I came in with, I was wearing a hospital dress which to my surprise was stained with blood. Whatever was going on here I definitely was not the first victim.

"There's nothing to worry about sweetie. If you don't fight you might live, but that might be hard. We aren't bad people , we're just doing our jobs and you happened to be in the wrong place at the right time.........well the right time for me. Your appearance was quite convenient." "You see ... the people I work for want you dead. not because they don't like you but because you're useless to them alive. They need your body for ....lets call it research. it's revolutionary , life changing , you should think of yourself as a hero. See like I said nothing to worry about"

Her smile was unnerving if not for the gag on my mouth I would've spat in her face, no thrown up. It'll be satisfying to see her frown. My eyes followed her movement as she injected something into the IV.  "sweet dreams" she said. The room went blurry and sure enough my eyes drooped till I fell asleep.

"Debra" I could hear a voice calling me. I was still in the room but it was pitch black. I heard the voice again. My mouth gag seemed to have disappeared maybe the smiling lady's heart wasn't made of stone after all.

"Who's that?"

"There's a pin by your hand pick it up and use it to undo the locks."

"I don't understand, where are you?" The room seemed empty.

"Just do it."

I felt around and sure enough there was a pin by my fingers. " How do I do this?" I said wrapping my hand around it.

.............................

"Good Morning, how was your night?" I opened my eyes to the lady removing my gag. Julie.......... I guess that  was her name , there was a pin on her dress with the name on it. I was confused, maybe it was Julie talking to me at night.

"How do I do it?" I asked.

"Do what?"

"Undo the locks, so I can get out" I said hoping she would tell me. She laughed , her laughter was even more annoying than her smile. " Looks like I gave you a little too much last night" I didn't believe her,  last night had to be real, I could feel the pin in my hand.
