PROLOGUE
I shivered as I ran further along the beach. I had been running for what felt like forever, although I knew somewhere in my mind, that it had only been about half an hour. My heart was pounding, my feet were throbbing and I was scared, unbelievably scared.
There was a blizzard and the ocean roared as it smashed onto shore violently, seeming to want nothing but to take me out to sea and destroy me. I wanted to find shelter, to find warmth. To find safety. Throb, throb, throb! My heart hammered in my chest almost as hard as my feet hammered on the ground. I knew I would collapse soon, I had no energy remaining, I was running on pure adrenaline and that was sure to run out soon. I would definitely fall to the ground before I reached the end of the haunting beach that stretched out endlessly in front of me. The only option I had other than the beach was the dark, gloomy looking forest to the left of me. I would give anything not to have to go into that place of horror, especially with the lightning ferociously attacking the tall trees.
I weighed up my options of running out in the open or risking taking to the trees. I had just about decided that staying on the beach was the best idea, when I realized my adrenaline was running low and my feet weren’t carrying me as quickly as they were before. I was slowing down and I could hear something..… footsteps. His footsteps. That was what made up my mind: knowing that he was on my trail, which meant that I hadn’t lost him yet and I NEEDED to lose him.
I cut to my left, nearly tripping over my own feet, and forced myself into the woods. I was just about at the tree line when I heard his gunfire and saw the bullet wedge itself into a lush pine tree about thirty centimetres away from me. I was going to die, that I knew for sure…
