One

The ominous dark dreary sky flickered with streaks of bright white as the lighting etched in the night. Loud shots of thunder boomed so loud that it rattled the window panes and the very bones that lay within the skin. It repeated its pattern of booms and flashes of light every few minutes highlighting the ocean waves that had become monstrous as if an aggressive army attack had been launched on the sand and rocks of the oceans shore. With all the noises pillaging the air, it is no wonder that Seth found himself unable to sleep tonight. Of course he has always had trouble falling asleep at night, but tonight would be an impossible event to overcome even for a moments sleep.

Seth slowly turned from his bedroom window, away from the gloom that lurked just outside to go to the kitchen. His decision was made just in time to spare his eyes from another bright flash that illuminated the bedroom and the scene outside. It is nights like these that create the perfect atmosphere for watching scary movies and Seth intended to make use of his restless night for that very purpose.

Now in the kitchen, Seth gathered his thoughts as he prepared a small glass of milk and snagged some Oreo cookies from the cabinets. He enjoyed dunking his Oreos in milk as he had done when he was a child. He remembered all the times his mother had gotten on to him for playing with his food. Can’t you just eat your cookie and drink your milk? Do you have to insist on dunking them in your glass and taking them apart?

Smiling at the words his mother used, he took a look around his kitchen. His mom was set in her ways but was a very nice woman indeed. She helped him design his kitchen after she came for a visit insisting that a kitchen is the heart of all homes. She said that the key to having a happy family is to have a happy kitchen and his kitchen used to be in no condition to support a happy family. She also believed that it was Seth’s kitchen that caused his lack of opportunities in the lady department.

Glancing over what his mother had done, Seth still could not believe the exquisite designs that graced the elegant dark oak. It looked majestic to him. The cabinet doors consisted of stained glass panes to accent the décor and contained little black iron knobs for handles. His mother had insisted on purchasing him a glossy black kitchen table and 4 chairs that looked immaculate as it completed the kitchen appearance. His pleased look soon dissipated from his face as another monstrous boom came from the depths of heaven followed by a small thud.

“Had to be a branch falling from one of the old trees,” Seth tried to assure himself as he ventured into the living room laying his cookies and milk on the cherry stained coffee table. Seth fumbled for the remote and searched for a scary movie to watch. The list contained infomercials and late night comedians. Just the sort of thing you would expect late at night. No one ever seemed to consider airing entertainment at night for those that work the graveyard shift. Seth settled on watching an old version of Dracula even though vampire movies created in the current times did not peak his interest.

Seth began the festivities by twisting the chocolate cookies apart so he could entice his taste buds with the sweet creamy taste of the Oreo filling that lay between them. He placed the first half of the cookie in the milk and held it letting the cookie absorb the milk into it. Carefully he pulled it out and savored the new soft taste of the combination. He was just about finished dunking the second half of the Oreo in the glass when he heard the thud again, but this time he was able to hear the sound more clearly than he had heard before as the constant ruckus from the nights chilly orchestra had taken a solemn breath.

Seth sat still for a moment as he pondered the origin of the noise only to be interrupted by the thud again, but this time it sounded as if it was urgent and in great need of answering. Seth cautiously left the comfort of the sofa and walked up to the front door in the middle of the entryway. The door stood about six and a half feet and was almost all glass except for a sturdy wooden frame to hold the fragile glamour into place. The glass was ornate and not very transparent but Seth could just make out a black shadow on the other side.
