Hanahaki Disease. By now, it was a well-known and infamous affliction. Anyone who was suffering from one-sided love could get infected. Flowers filled their lungs, causing them to slowly suffocate unless their love was returned. For some mystical reason, love was one of the only ways to cure it. The other was surgery. Surgery would get rid of the flowers forever, but it would remove more than that. It would remove the patient's feelings of love towards their crush, sometimes never letting them love again.

There was, however, a different and less common type of Hanahaki. While it also caused flowers to grow in the body, it was even worse. With this strain of Hanahaki, flowers would grow everywhere in the body. In the hair, skin, eyes, ears, and more. The flowers would mercilessly damage wherever they grew in. In the final stage, the patient would develop regular Hanahaki. The dainty petals of the flowers and the emotional and physical pain of the patient contrasted so harshly that it was almost beautiful. Almost.

Akaashi was entering Fukurodani's Volleyball Clubroom. As usual, he was the first to arrive. He quietly hummed to himself as the rest of the team came in with some quiet chatter. He knew to enjoy the moment of peace while it lasted. He did feel a bit off today, with a slight throbbing behind his temple, but he decided that he could deal with it for practice. Before long he could hear footsteps outside quickly growing louder and Akaashi immediately knew who it was.

"Hey hey hey!" Bokuto shouted, bursting through the door. Akaashi's suspicions were confirmed as the captain of the volleyball club came in.

"Hello Bokuto-san," Akaashi said curtly. He glanced at Bokuto to see his spikey hair and undone uniform all messed up and yet he still had a stupidly huge grin on his face. He was practically beaming. It was one of the things Akaashi loved about the boy.

"Well if it isn't my favorite setter, early as always," Bokuto commented.

"Of course I'm early Bokuto-san. I am the vice-captain." Akaashi glared at him. "Maybe you should be early too, Mr. Captain-of-the-Volleyball-Club."

" Hey! Don't be so mean, Akaashi! It's scary..."

"Scary? You know I'm just stating the truth," he said with a sigh.

"Awww c'mon. We're besties and besties don't treat besties like that," Bokuto stated very confidently. Akaashi felt his cheeks redden. Besties? What's that supposed to mean?

"Right," Akaashi replied with another sigh. "Well, I'm going to the gym. I'll see you guys there."

He quickly walked out before anyone could say anything else but he heard chuckling from the clubroom. That caused him to blush even more. Jeez. What was that all about? Akaashi buried his face in his hands and groaned. He couldn't stop thinking about that simple comment. I'm probably just overthinking it. Yeah, that's it.

Akaashi couldn't even convince himself of that. Bokuto was the closest friend Akaashi had or, as Bokuto had said, they were "besties." But was that all they were to Akaashi? He couldn't help but overanalyze their relationship. That was just the way he was with everything. Smart, analytical, observant. At least that's what he thought (and hoped) of himself.

As Akaashi was deep in thought, he heard something move behind him. Panicked, he quickly spun around to face the person behind him. It was just Bokuto. Of course it was.

"Hey, Akaashi! Stop standing there and let's go!"

"Sorry. You're right." Akaashi trailed behind Bokuto as they headed towards the gym. Get it together Akaashi! You need to focus on what's happening now, practice. Jeez, what's up with you today? Focus focus focus.
