I am Spirit, Stallion of the Cimmaron. My herd is fleet-footed and wild. One almost winter day, I lead them to the forest of pine trees, where we will sleep tonight. Snow has begun to fall. It reminds of a time about two years ago when the twoleggeds captured me. They put me on a bellowing, huffing, black machine. I was so torn-down from Rain being shot that I had no room for fear in my mind. Neither of us had any idea to whether she would make it through that chilly night while I lay beside her. A burst of frosty wind shakes me from my memory. Across the landscape, on a mountain in the distance, the powdery snow drifts about in an unnatural way. Why is the snow doing that? Wind has never made that pattern before. I wonder, confused. It curls into beautiful spirals and then reappears somewhere else. I neigh to my sister, Eclipse, and she trots over. "Spirit what's wrong?" she asks. I toss my head in the mountain's direction. She turns and sees the odd snow patterns, just as I had only moments before. "I should go check that out." I tell her matter-of-factly. "Yes but do you remember what happened last time you 'had to check that out'?" her tone softens as she mentions my capture. It was hard for both Eclipse and my mother, Ezparanza, when the twoleggeds took me. "I have to go,  please Eclipse! You know I can't think straight with things like this confusing me." I plead her to give in to my whim. "I guess you want me to watch the herd then. Please be very very careful." she does give in and I touch her nose with my own in thanks. "I will. And I won't get caught this time. I have learned."

After telling Rain (my mate) and my mother my plans, I  said goodbye to the herd. Taking off at a gallop, I plan to reach the mountain in at least two days. The snow really fascinated me, I must know what caused it to be that way.
