Prologue

I was just staring right at the coffin laying there, feeling numb, not being able to hold back my tears, my voice stuck in my throat. The numb feeling, my heart aching, my head pounding. I looked around, people were standing there listening to the priest. I looked at my hands; at the ring on my finger, and then I looked at the picture next to the coffin, and the ring next to it. The Priest was saying the last words, I couldn't hear exactly what he was saying, I only heard his voice. I was zoomed out.

Then they buried the coffin, just like that, they buried it. They buried the guy I loved, the one who gave me hope, the one who had my heart, the guy who made me believe in me, who made me believe in love and happily ever after. But he left me, he left me alone to face this cruel world. The guy who promised me to stay with me forever, never leaving my side. The guy who was always there for me, wiping every tear away, wanting me for me. The guy who made me break the rules of not getting married till I was forty, and here I was nineteen and they were burying my husband, my love, leaving me with my own sorrows and fears, leaving me with a child. They buried it slowly. I won't be able to feel his touch anymore, I won't be able to feel his lips on mine, I won't be able to feel the warmth of his body, the warmth that made everything better, the warmth that made me strong. I won't be able to feel it again- I thought to myself.

I wanted to run to the coffin, I wanted to stop it! It had to stop! I wanted to feel his breath on my neck, I wanted to feel his heart beat, I wanted to hear his voice again, I wanted to hear those three little words; I wanted him here with me. I looked at the coffin that was all the way down, then I looked up at the sky. He wasn't the guy who was underneath, he was up in the sky. He wouldn't leave me he promised, he will always be with me. My lips started trembling, then I looked at the ground as they did the last rituals.

I had to get away, he's waiting for me at the lake.

We promised every Sunday we would go to the lake, at four O'clock, where we first met. We've been doing it for three years now, we promised we wouldn't stop after our honeymoon, but we never got the chance to go again, because he left. He did, he left me, it's his fault! He left, he wasn't strong enough! He had to do it for me! What if he didn't leave? What if he's waiting for me at the lake?

I looked at my watch and it was three, thirty five. I had time to get to the lake. I looked around, and saw people saying prayers. I didn't bother telling anyone, because they wouldn't understand. I ran away from the crowd, taking off my heels and running to my car. I turned on the engine and stormed off out of the graveyard's parking lot.

He's waiting for me.

He's waiting for me.

He's waiting for me.

He didn't leave.

He won't.

He promised.

He'll never leave.

I kept on telling myself, as much as I knew it wasn't true, but I wanted a miracle. There had to be a miracle! I stopped my car and looked around.
