Rain could be heard forming puddles near the grounds where Madeline Kirkland, the Bio-Medical Engineer with the mind as sharp as a knife; but the temperament as short as a midget, stood. She sighs as she waited in the bus stop for her friend. The rain already made the temperature unbearable. Top with a really long day at work, she was annoyed to say the least. The analog clock on her wrist kept ticking until it beeped repeatedly, her friend was late. Very.
"Tch, where in the world is he?" she blurted out to no one in particular.
She was about to open her phone and call a cab for the night, when suddenly a booming voice could be heard echoing throughout the damp terminal.
"Oh, dear princess Eli! Were you planning on leaving your prince in shining armour, The Ace Detective of Doncaster, without as much of a word?" shouted a male voice from the driver's seat of a black car.
"Well if it ain't Ace Detective Arthur Lawson. Or should I say, Ace Defective?" Replied Madeline.
"Ouch! That hurts y'know."
Madeline sat on the front passenger seat of Arthur's car and proceeds to slam the door.
"You're late. An hour late." She said with an irritated undertone.
"Sorry, it was a hectic day at work today. I had to slove a freak accident case. And as you can see, it wasn't pretty." Arthur shoved a folder on Madeline's lap.
"Yikes, tough luck."
"Yeah I've been the unluckiest human being known to man for the past few weeks. Anywho, how's Matt? Still writing about that Governor Beilschmidt scandal?"
"Uh-huh, my dad's been obsessing over it and plans on releasing it to the public soon. How 'bout you? How're the kids?"
"Yeah about that, I finally got custody over Connor. But the judge ruled out that Queenie stays with her mum. I tried persuading the judge to rethink his decision but the ruling was already concrete."
"A detective losing a case? How ironic."
"Hey! I got one of 'em didn't I?"
The rest of the ride was spent with laughter and reminiscence of their past. Without even realizing it, they've already arrived at Madeline's home. After gathering her things, she opened the car door.
"Whelp, thanks for the ride buckaroo. See ya." Madeline was about to close the door when suddenly Arthur stopped her.
"Wait, wait, wait! Tomorrow's a Saturday. So how about it?"
"How 'bout what?"
"A drink! Let's grab a drink like the good ol' days."
"You're saying that as if our hair's turning white."
"Well?"
Madeline sighed. She wanted to drink with her old friend, but she already got things planned for that Saturday.
"Can't. I already got things planned with my old man tomorrow. Maybe next Saturday?" Stated Madeline.
"Awh, fine. Say hi to Matt for me! See you."
"see you too, Artie."
Arthur was shocked by the usage of his old nickname, but was flattered nonetheless. As Madeline entered her house, Arthur drove off the driveway. As soon as she closed and locked the door, she removed her coat and hung it on the nearest coat hanger. She checked her wristwatch one last time, 12:32 AM was the time. Madeline grunted. She now realizes how stupid her decisions were on working that extra shift at her lab. She picked up the mountain of mails piling up on the floor.
