He was on his way to office. He usually takes a short walk for catching a bus for office. On his way, he saw a woman; somewhere around 45 years old. He noticed that she was giving away free food to needy people outside the temple. He decided to go after her and have a closer look and also wanted to seek blessings of God. On his way to stairs of temple he noticed that she gave one piece of bread/loaf to each person. One thing disturbed the fellow boy was that even after demands of needy people, she didn't give extra piece to hungry people.
He felt an urge to go and ask her the reasons, though it was none of his business. And when asked she told that she want to help each and every person in queue. If she would listen to demands of the hungry and needy people seated first in queue and give them extra pieces of loaf/bread she would not have sufficient things left for other needy people. What a dilemma! Or what an irony! We need one more story on this to have clarity of what we should call it a dilemma or irony!
We can relate this incident to that of Hindu mythological incident when Krishna takes test of valor of donation between two – Arjun and Karna. Krishna gave both of them a mountain of GOLD and asked them to distribute the same among villagers nearby. Firstly, Arjun came to show his valor of donation. He, having expertise in his bow and arrow, made pieces of mountain and started distribution among villagers. But the more pieces he made that of mountain, the more it seemed to grow in size. And after realizing this, Arjun surrendered to Krishna.
Then came Karna – the ultimate courageous donor of all time. He came and called out all villagers near that mountain. And said to them "from now on this mountain of GOLD is yours" and walked away.
May be the woman in above first story, would not have known this.
What Krishna justified was - to give away something for charity; we first need to let go of emotions attached to that thing. We first need to detach ourselves completely from the greed/love/ownership of that thing. Probably then only we will serve the purpose of donations completely!
As they say, charity begins at home but may be at heart first !
So ? an irony ? or dilemma ?
