Chapter 1 - The letters

Sleepy eye post office

"Thank you" Hester sue says as she picks up her the mail and walks out

On the way back to the school she was looking through them to see who they were from. There were a couple bills the school had to pay, a letter from Mary's sister Laura, and letter for Adam from Chicago

As she walked in the door she raised her voice and said"Adam! Mary! Mail for both of you" As the couple walked out of the classroom they say at the same time "thank you Hester sue"

Adam read his first it said :

Dear Mr Adam Kendall,

I am a news reporter and journalist for a VERY popular and wealthy paper right here in Chicago. We heard about your award that you won over a year ago, and we were sorry to hear about your misfortunate stage accident. Then we found out you now got your sight back and r studying to become a lawyer. I am very interested in how this all came about and I would like to interview you and your wife. Please write back or send a telegram discussing our plans. I also plan to bring one of the paper's new journalists. Please write soon!

Adam was surprised about what he just read until his wife interrupted his thoughts saying " Adam? What is it?" Adam replied confused then excited " The award I won for being the first blind teacher to win it. A reporter from Chicago wants to interview me and how and when I got my sight back" "Oh Adam that's wonderful!!" Mary exclaimed Adam continued
" he's a senior executive for that paper and he's bringing his new assistant " Hester sue said " sounds exciting but we need to get this place cleaned up!" Adam said " he said to send him a telegram saying a date ASAP. So how soon can this place be cleaned up?" " With the help of the three of us , pa and ma, Laura and Almonzo, I think end of week!" Mary said "Good! I'll head to the telegram office now!"Adam said basically running out the door and down the street from excitement

When Adam was gone Hester sue said " that reminds me! You got a letter from Laura! Do want me to read it to you?

"Yes"
Dear Mary,
I hope you Adam , and Hester sue , and the children are well. I have some big news! I'm pregnant! Yes! You and Adam will be an aunt and uncle! Ever since Manly found out he wont let me do ANYTHING around the house but rest. I convinced him to come visit you! Almanzo's coming because he's interested in knowing how Adam is doing in law school but I know the real reason is to take of me! We all send love and I'm happy to say everyone is well. We miss all of you,I do manly does, ma and pa, Albert , Carrie, Grace and even Bandit!

Ps Teaching is going awesome and Carie and Albert's grades are sky high!

Perfect timing Hester sue said

Thank you Mrs foster Charles says as he leaves and sits down on the bench around a tree near by and reads the letter from his daughter.

Caroline! Charles says happily Ma walks out of the kitchen and reads the letter about the reporter and the cleaning and Mary wanting her folks there. That night ma, pa, Laura, and almonzo talk about their plans . Since the mill needed to make a delivery to sleepy eye the next morning that's when they were going to leave. Charles said Albert was old enough to watch his sisters and the farm so , that was no problem.
