Chapter 1 Picking the kids

I'm from District 12 and we're poor, everyone in District 12 is poor. My mom is named Stacy Everest. My name is Katie. And my sister is named Wren Everest. My Dad is Dead. He died 5 years ago in the mind do to a bomb. He was the only one in there when the bomb went off, and so he died in the mind 5 years, 7 months and 5 days.

After Quinn died my mom went threw a faze she could not get out of. For 3 whole years. She didn't move that much, she didn't Speck, she wasn't the same. She's never been the same. She tries to be ore mother. But I take care of Wren. Most of the time. The World is Divided into 12 Districts. And the Capital is all of Canada. There's an Island witch is where The Fighting Games Take place and where president Snow lives. It Starts with me in the woods. A bright hot sunny day. I was hunting for deer for my Family or to sell for the 665th Fighting Games concert where a bunch of people to go celebrate the kids who doesn't get pick to fight. The age to fight is 10 to 16. I am 16 years old. I'm blond and I'm about 5'9 and I'm good with A Crossbow. I was in the woods and I saw a deer. I ducked so it wouldn't see me I aimed I had a perfect shot.

"Hey." A voice said behind me and it startled me and I shot up words and the arrow went flying and it hit a Owl threw the chest. I quickly pointed my Crossbow at the voice I heard. "Yo!" A man said. It a was a man I knew since I was 7. Gale Overbeck. Gale was the guy I had a crush on for years, he's 20 years old he had snuck up on me so he could scare me, he thought I was just looking at the Deer once the arrow went flying he went pale. Pale because he's never seen me with a Crossbow, I only ever tell him how I catch the deers or the Owls. He thought I was joking, now that he sees me with one pointing at him made me fear for his life. "Gale are you freaking crazy?" I yelled.

"Please I'm sorry!" Gale Overbeck Said in a fearful voice. I lowered the crossbow and he stopped breathing so hard. "I could have killed you dumbass!" I Said. "Sorry. You got an owl at least" Said Gale. "I could have sold it at the concert." I Said. The wind picked up and the trees started to move more. "Shh. Do you hear that?" I Said. "Wha?" Gale Said before I shushed him "Gale Get down!" I Said as I knew the flying ship S.S.5000. it flew over us and was heading for the town. "Shit. We should get back before they start rounding up everyone." I Said. "Well let's go." Said Gale. Gale sounded like he was in a hurry. "wait, who do you think is doing the announcement this year?" Gale said "I think they said there either sending Effie Tinkle. Or Jason Krug." I Said. We started to make way threw the woods. Once we made it back they were already sending kids to the place we're the two kids are selected to go to the fighting games.

I see my sister Wren. Then I remembered that I had a pin in my pocket of an Eagle. I ran up to her and said. "Hey Wren. I found this and I'm wanting to give it to you. It brings good luck." She grabbed it and she said to me. "Thanks Katie. I'll keep it with me." Said Wren. Wren was short as she was only 11. Her eye were as Green as green could get. Her heir is long and Golden. "Go to the 10 to 13 row and I'll go to the 14 to 16 row. And I'll find you after everything is over." I Said. We both walked off to the announcement. 20 minutes later the announcement begins. "I'm Effie Tinkle and I'm here to pick out two kids to fight in the 649th Fighting games. So this is two bowls filled with all the children ages 10-16" Effie reached into the bowls for the Girls to be picked. She opened the note and once that opened I felt a tents feeling in my gut and I looked for Wren. "Wren Everest." The crowd went silent once Effie said my little sister's name. "Come on sweetie where are you." Effie Said. "Wren?!" I Said as I saw her start to move in a crowd of kids. "Wren!" I yelled. "Katie?!" She looked back and yelled my name. Two soldiers in all black with white helmets on them started to walk towards me. I knew they were gonna hold me back to I did the stupidest thing in the world. 4 words and I was screwed. "I volunteer to fight!" I yelled, I didn't realized what I just said and the two soldiers let my arms go in surprise. And I ran to Wren and fell to my knees. In tears and I told her. "Wren I'm sorry just go see mom." "Katie what's gonna happen?" She said, I looked up cause I didn't want to keep everyone waiting on me. "I volunteer." I Said in a voice that was hesitating. "We...We have a volunteer." Effie Said in a surprised voice. "Well. What's your name deer?" "Katie Everest. Daughter of Quinn Darling." I Said. Everyone started to whisper open each other, I heard some words like. "She's not gonna make it back."

"Dude she's dead."

"Why her. She's my crush." I recognized that voice. But I don't remember who's. It is and so as I'm walking I look back to the crowd and I see a couple people I know. I see a boy. 16 years old tall blond hair hazel eyes Peter Malcom, as I ascended up the stairs I got a better look at Effie's face she painted it all white.

"I've seen yonger but whatever" Effie said under her breath. I looked upon the crowd and I heard Effie say. "Our next, Male fighter." Effie put her hand the name bowl. "Peter, Malcom" he looked to him and he looked terrified. Then he looked both ways countless times. Peter Malcom started to walk out of the crowd and he looked up. "Peter Malcom. Son of. Corbin Grayback." Said Effie, "yes ma'am." Peter said in a stuttering voice Effie was looking down at him. "Well, at least maybe we might have a winner in district 12" a women's voice yelled out, Peter looked back and he looked back up. He starting to walk up the stairs he stood on the other side of Effie. "Today. We shall celebrate for these two's life," Effie Said. "That's a nice way to put it." Said Peter. The three of us walked Peter got put in a room with the number 253. I got put in a room with the number 255. I knew this was gonna be dangerous. So I walked to the door and banged at the door. "Hey! I want to see my family! My sister is name Wren Everest and Stacy Everest. Please?" I Said with a tear and my voice braking down. "I'll see what I can do Miss Everest." Said the man in front of the door, 7 minutes went.

Everyone second felt like minutes. Everyone minute felt like hours all because I'm waiting to see Gale, Stacy and Wren. I'm so scared because I'm going to fight for my life all for the entertainment of the asshole's of the capital. The door knob moves. I felt like, I was gonna have a heart attack. Gale walks in along with Wren and Stacy. I hugged Wren for as long as I felt. It was scary knowing that this might be the last time I might see my younger sister

She was always smarter then me so I hope she makes the right moves while.

I fight for survival. I get up almost in tears and wanting to break down I look towards my mum and I told her straight to her face, "don't you let her go. You can't leave her in a Time like this. Your all she's got now." Mum looked at me like she wanted to say something. I looked toward Gale and I said. "Take care of them for me?" I asked. I used a voice I knew he'd never say no to. And like I expected. "Yeah. Anything for you Katie"

Despite on what I think of Gale. Cause all I think of him as a brother. "Thank you" I Said back to him. "Okay. Everyone out." Said the Guard. "What no that was barley a minute." The start walking towards us and I freak out and I tell him in such a smooth voice. "Ok. Wren I love you. Take care" I Said. Wren looked at me. "Try to win" she said "I'll try. Mum I love you, remember what I said," I Said. "Yeah. I promise." Said Stacy

I didn't have time to say goodbye to Gale. And I felt like Shit when I didn't.
