"Liv, if he's the one bringing these notes himself, perhaps we could catch him." Phillis said. She quickly dashed to the door and opened it, rushing outside of the flat, even, to catch who my admirer was, but she soon entered the room disappointed.
"I already tried that." I said. "He's too fast. Bring the note."
Phillis opened it before bringing it to me, her expression gloomy as she walked to me. I took the paper from her and read the note myself.
Goodbye, my sweet Liv.
I was way too confused to comprehend anything Phillis was trying to explain to me; the numerous reasons why he'd write that and what he was thinking to even want to say goodbye to me. I was too dazed to understand what was happening. I held the paper and just stared at it for a long time, my hands trembling for a while. Phillis then offered me her chocolate in a funny attempt to make me react but I couldn't even hear the humor in her voice. I was too far gone.
As I remained seated on my bed, trying to make sense of the situation, Phillis' parents called and updated her about the outcome of the trial. I broke out of my confusion to listen to her mother as she spoke on loudspeaker. Jeff was fined to pay hundreds of millions to Phillis for damages incurred because of the attack, and he was sent to jail to serve two years for his crime. It didn't seem like much punishment, if you ask me, but at least it was justice. Jeff was definitely going to get expelled from his post-graduate program because of prison and he would be forever marked as an ex-convict wherever he went after he got out. Phillis had won and somehow it felt like every girl Jeff had physically hurt in his life and every girl in the world who had gone through something similar had felt a little bit of justice.
Phillis' parents insisted we spent the night in their house, but as much as I wanted to be there for my friend, I had a little headache and I needed to be alone. So I took with me all the notes and letters and everything of secret admirer label and went back to the apartment.
It was then that I took my time to arrange all the notes I found in the dorm room and read them all again. Then it started to make sense.
After a couple of notes, he tried to see me. He sent the letter to inform me of that. Then when I didn't show, he sent a couple more notes trying to convince me to see him. And when I still didn't show, he started to think I didn't want to meet him, which totally explained the notes in which he was practically begging me. Then such notes stopped. He then said he was giving me the time and space to think about it, if I wished to see him or not. He was expecting my call if I wanted to meet with him. But again, I never did. Then the next note he sent was the last one I got that afternoon, in which he said goodbye.
I would never see him now and he will go away thinking that I didn't want to see him. All lectures were over now. Exams was two weeks away. After the exams, I wouldn't see anyone from my class again until graduation. This really was it. And now he'd never know that I've started to really like him, and that crazy enough, his notes and flowers and sweet gestures have made me very happy these last couple of months. I sat on my bed and buried my head between my legs. I was so frustrated at how wonderful things were in the beginning, and how horrible things had ended.
It was truly such an awful ending. And it certainly didn't help when Phillis called to tell me that she had googled the name of the flower he had brought and that it was called pink carnation.
"Liv, it's so romantic. They're perfect. And they mean, I'll never forget you. He's saying he'll never forget you, Liv. And he'll never stop loving you."
Knowing that certainly did not make things any easier for me.
