I tried to pay attention to the speech whiles watching the little girl as she sat with her friends. But I was more focused on the girl that I wasn't really listening to the speech, until I heard the best man say my sweet valentine. My eyes were suddenly drawn to him and I couldn't move my gaze, as I begun to pay attention.
I waited, for what seemed like a very long time, to tell the one person I have loved for years about my feelings. But at last, it didn't pan out the way I hoped it would. Mostly because I was too much of a chicken to do much about it when I could have. I waited till the last minute and I lost her in the end. But my brother, Jasper, is not the shy type. Many of you here were our mates and would understand what I'm saying. He is a guy who goes after what he wants, and he never lets' go. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with Lily and so he did something about it. And with such attitude he lived his life, fighting for what he wanted and what he believed in. I used to think Lily was so lucky to have a forward person and thinker like Jasper. He would treat her so right, she'd get tired of it. But Lily, knowing you, I know Jasper is the luckiest guy in the world. And I have no doubt that for the rest of his life, he will never cease to prove that to you. So let's all raise our glasses, to the bride and groom, Lily and Jasper. May your life together be filled with wonder and lovely surprises, and enough children to create a basketball team. Cheers!
Everyone cheered and clinked their glasses and then the music begun to play. I stared at the best man as he left the stage, thinking deeply as if to make some pieces fit. Then when I saw the little girl who had brought me the flower earlier run to Edmund and he in turn lifting her to his lap, I wondered if he was the one, and if the girl he was talking about in his speech was me. I knew just because he knew the little girl didn't mean he was the one who had sent her, but I could just feel like. He was the one.
But it didn't make any sense. The best man was Jasper's elder brother, Edmund. He entered college the same time as his brother so he could be in the same class as him. Jasper had some health problems and it was his way of keeping an eye on him. I knew that story because Phillis had once told me after hearing it from some girls in the class. Edmund was two years older than Jasper. But it didn't make sense to me that he was the one, because I knew he had a girlfriend in the class and they had been together for quite some time. I had even seen them together earlier at the reception. It couldn't be him. He couldn't be my secret admirer. And I certainly couldn't be the girl he was talking about.
Phillis was too caught up in conversation to realize that I was lost in thought and had a headache. I decided to step out from the hall for some fresh night air. Oh how I wish I had just remained in my seat! I got up and was spotted by a blinding spotlight. And then everyone begun to clap for me. I was very confused that I tried to sit down but then the MC walked to me and asked me to come on stage. I turned to Phillis and she explained that the MC was asking for someone from the couple's class to sing for them, and I was too lost in thought that I hadn't heard that and had accidentally volunteered myself. But when I wanted to explain myself to the MC about this very little misunderstanding, all eyes were on me. And I had no choice but to walk with him to the stage.
My legs shook violently in my heels, and if not for the help of the MC I would have surely fallen from all the nervousness I was feeling at that time. Standing in front of all those guests and seeing just how many people were there, all staring at me as the MC handed me the microphone, all I was praying for was not to faint, or even worse, throw up. I was praying not to ruin the wedding.
