Gracelyn's POV
Could you imagine waking up to bustling guards outside your window? Could you imagine the whole town at your neighbors door pounding to get them out. Having to avoid guards just to get something to eat? That's my reality. Hopping from roof to roof avoiding guards Is a thing I do on a regular basis. I hopped from one to the next, a rush of adrenaline pumping through my veins with each jump, fearing falling and being taken from the town I grew up in to be with the people who gave up, who didn't fight for what they stand for, fearing being taken where people can't be free. The castle. All women in my town are being brought to the kingdom to be possible suitors for the soon to be king, and I don't wanna go down in someone's history book in 100 years about how "you were saved from that small town" because I love this town. I finally reach the end of the jumps and climb down a ladder on the side of one of the buildings and walk into a humble bakery my aunt owns. "Anybody home?" I shouted. My voice echoed through the empty bakery as I turn the lights on to see the attic door open. I look up into the dark room expecting my aunt to be up there "Marlena it's just me, you don't have to hide" my voice once again echoed through, this time into the attic. I climbed up the ladder and turned the light on. A tall dark figure was standing across the room, he quickly turned toward me and I got a glimpse of his piercing blue eyes before he looked down. "I wasn't expecting visitors" the chilling voice said, "Marlena isn't here. Go home Gracelyn" the voice sends shivers down my spine. A feeling of weakness went through me, I feel helpless, like if I were in trouble i could do absolutely nothing about it. "How do you know my name..." I asked with fear in my words. "I know many things darling, and I know you should leave" his voice grew firmer, threatening even. "And why is that?" I asked. "Oh you're just full of questions aren't you" he said sarcastically. He started walking toward me, towering over me. His silhouette was more than a shadow, tall, icy blue eyes that could stare a hole in your soul, a evil grin plastered on his face, wavey dark hair under a black hooded cloak. "Things could get rather...messy if you don't" his grin widened, showing bright white sharp teeth. "Where is Marlena?!"I said with fear of what could have happened to her, "the kingdom, which is where you should be you rodent" he said. My face grew pale, tears grew in my eyes. She's gone. Marlena is gone. I ran out of that attic. That cold bakery that smelt of burnt coffee beans and cookies, climbed up the ladder and hopped from roof to roof sobbing, she was all I had left. I heard foot steps taking short breaks about as long as the distance between buildings. He was following me, but I didn't care, I climbed into the abandoned building and threw my bag down that was filled with the food I was going to give Marlena. I sat down on my makeshift bed and closed my eyes tight, tears streaming down my face. Then something warm went around me, it wrapped around my shoulders. I opened my eyes to see those blue eyes, the blue eyes I hated. "Why do you stay in this dump" the same chilling voice from before asked. "It's home." I wiped the tears from my eyes and looked at him, he no longer had the cloak from before, it was now wrapped around my shoulders. His facial features were now present. I don't know wether I should hate or like him. "Who are you anyways?" I asked the near stranger, "Liam" he introduced himself. "If you were telling me to go home, then why did you follow me... I did what you asked." I questioned him once again. "I don't know. Wanted to check out where you live I guess" he answered while looking around some more. "That's not creepy at all" I rolled my eyes. I feel more comforted around him than scared now, like he would protect me. I started to doze off into a state I hated to be in, the least aware state. Sleep. Sleeping means letting your guard down, being taken. Sleep is usually filled with nightmares, and the good dreams aren't the best. I saw his eyes, that's when I knew I would be ok. I fell asleep.
*+*In the Morning*+*I woke up to the sun streaming in on me, blaring into my eyes and saw him, He was gazing out the window, watching the bustling people, hearing the cries of the people who were done fighting for what they believe in and guards yelling. "You would be better off there" he said to me then looked over to me. "Marlena needs you, I promise." He looked sure. "How could you promise something like that, you're not there, you wouldn't know" I crossed my arms and got up and walked to the window watching families be torn apart like my own. "I know your sister, I've talked to her at the castle. She misses you and wishes you would come. Your mom, was made a maid. And Marlena a chef. They all miss you. You would be with them again." He told me. "Gosh why do you want me to go so bad?" "Just trust me" he grabbed my hand and started leading me out into the open. "Stop!" I yelled at him trying to get free of his grip. "I said stop! I don't wanna go!" He continued to pull me. He's stronger than me, I'm thought i would never be able to get my wrist free from his grip. I became all that I never wanted to be in that moment, weak and helpless. I was part of the crowd, I was the cries. With the little strength I had left I pulled away from Liam's grip and ran away as fast as I could, never looking back, hopping on the roofs of all of the empty apartments, running with no aim, just away from him. Maybe eyes really the windows to the soul, because his are cold and icy.
