Echopaw blinked multiple times, her eyes adjusting to the light filtering into the apprentice's den. The sunlight tickled her nose, and she yawned. She knew she had slept past the dawn patrol. Her mentor Jaggedpeak had let her rest after Echopaw's first battle yesterday. They had fought SandClan again because the flea-pelts wouldn't stop stealing StoneClan prey.
She looked around, seeing Robinpaw still sleeping beside her. Echopaw twitched her whiskers in amusement. her small friend could sleep through almost anything. Squirrelpaw, the other apprentice, was not in the den anymore, so he was probably out with his mentor.
As Echopaw got up and stretched, she winced slightly because of the cut on her side. Scorpionclaw, a SandClan warrior, had given it to her in the battle. Good thing she left a few scars he would remember her by, too. It had stopped bleeding but it was still sore and ached when she moved. I'll just go see Strongwind later, she silently noted in her head.
Padding out of the den, she decided to go look for Jaggedpeak so they could go hunting together. Lately, Jaggedpeak didnn't have as much time for Echopaw because he was too busy caring for other cats. His mate, Pebbledapple, was becoming more distant from him, and he went through some sort of depression which consisted of not talking to Echopaw for small periods of time and not eating.
Looking around the clearing for her mentor, she could see Dandelionpelt and Lilacpetal sharing tongues outside the warriors den and Venomsight on the Outlook Rock. Wolfstar was nowhere to be seen, so he was probably in his den. Strongwind had just walked into camp, carrying a bundle of marigold, and Jagged peak trotted in behind him. Echopaw couldn't help but purr. They were together a lot lately.
Strongwind had been the medecine cat ever since Wolfstar was a kit, and he needed all the help he could get, since he didn't have an apprentice. Jaggedpeak was one of the only cats that would help him willingly. Then again, Strongwind wasn't always the most pleasant cat to be around. Him and Jaggedpeak shared a special bond, like father and son. Not that they were, though, because medecine cats can't have kits.
Echopaw decided to get his attention. "Jaggedpeak!" she yelled across the clearing, running over to him, and nearly colliding with Strongwind in the process.
"Watch it, apprentice!" Strongwind snapped, causing Echopaw to shrink back a little bit.
Jaggedpeak stepped forward, finally noticing Echopaw. "It's okay Strongwind, she was just excited." I caught the small smile forming on his face, and I could tell he was amused with what Echopaw had done.
Strongwind grumbled something under his breath before picking up the marigold that he had dropped and stalked the rest of his way to the medecine cat den.
"What were you doing? Can't you just walk? Honestly," Jaggedpeak rolled his eyes. "you would think flying snails were attacking and SandClan cats were riding them."
