I awoke to a gunshot, I scramble from my tent almost tripping over myself and hurry outside. It was a chilly frosty fall air that surrounds me. Then I see her. My best friend lays dead on the ground with a single bullet shot through her head.
"No!" I collapse to the ground beside her screaming, with tears streaming down my face. I pull at my hair and clutch my chest.
I feel absolutely shattered, I wish I was the one dead.
"We've got to go Kat, you've drawn too much attention to us". I look up to see Dontae behind me. He puts a hand on my shoulder in comfort.
"We can't just leave her here," I manage to say through my sobs. He nods and pulls me to my feet.
"I'll get rid of the body but we need to get moving its not safe here anymore." Dontae looks at me with pity in his eyes. I glance at Violets body once more before going back to the tent to gather my things. The leaves crunch under my feet and the wind howls around me.
I open up the tent and sigh loudly, I am heartbroken.Suddenly I find a photo of my younger sister. It was from the last birthday party she had before everything happened. God I miss her, I wonder if she's alive.
I shove all of my belongings into my bag trying to distract myself.
After we're all done packing we head out."Oh my god, we've been walking for hours now when are we going to stop?" I ask Dontae and groan in frustration. He stops and look around for a second, "We'll camp here for night then," he agrees.
We unload all of our stuff and set up camp. I look around I'm surrounded by tall dead trees and darkness. I feel lonely without Violet and I hug myself against the cold. I hope we survive. All of a sudden I here crunching leaves behind me. I whip around and draw my dagger from my side.
"Sorry I didn't mean to scare you," I take a deep breath. "Oh hey Isaiah it's okay." He slowly walks over to me. "Hey how are you dealing with everything?" he asks. "You mean how am I dealing with the fact the my best friend is lying dead somewhere with a bullet in her head? Great, just fucking perfect couldn't be better," I say colder than I meant it to sound, I take a deep breath."Sorry I'm just really upset I didn't mean to snap," I look at Isaiah and smile.
"Its okay I understand I'd be pretty upset too." I see the sadness and pity in his deep husky dark brown eyes which just upsets me more.
"I don't need your pity Isaiah, my friend is dead move on; you pitying me isn't going to change that." I wanted to take it back as soon as I said it. "I wasn't pitying you Kat I was just trying to comfort you," he snaps.
He gets up and storms off into the dark abyss forest. I take a deep breath and sigh, "fuck."
All of a sudden I hear a blood curdling scream in the distance. I shoot up and run towards the screams to see Dontae getting dragged away by a heard of zombies. I bolt over to him to try and help but its no use there too over powering. I just stand there in disbelief as I watch Dontae get torn away and pulled into the forest.I'm in utter shock at what just happened. I stand looking off into the forest as I start to feel tears sting my eyes. I take a breath to stop myself from crying.
"I cant cry right now I have to stay strong," I whisper to myself. I start to panic when I realize that Isaiah is still in the forest.
Shit.
I start screaming his name as I frantically run into the forest."Isaiah! Where are you!"
It feels like hours have passed when I finally find him sitting by the crashing river banks. I let out a sigh of relief.
I jog over to him and wrap my arms around him, "thank god your okay I'm so sorry about before" I say while tears stain my face. He looks at me and I see the worry and panic fill is face. "Oh my god what happened to you?" he says I start to cry harder as I explain to him that Dontae was dragged away by zombies. The moment I finish I see his face go as white as a sheet."I'm so sorry Isaiah I tried to hold on but I couldn't I'm so sorry."
"It's okay Kat I understand I don't blame you I just wish this didn't happen." We both sigh and look across the river. I gasp as I see the beautiful sunrise that covers the sky in faded pinks, purples and oranges. It's absolutely breathtaking."At least one good thing came out of today," I say trying to be positive. Isaiah chuckles.
"Of course you think that."I sit and take in the sunrise for a few more moments. I stand up and look at Isaiah.
"We should get going it's too dangerous here now." He nods in agreement and we start towards our camp to gather our things. The leaves crunch under our feet. We walk in dead silence until we reach the the camp sight, I feel my eyes start to burn as I walk past where Dontae was dragged off. All I see is the aftermath of Dontaes struggle and it makes my heart ache. He was my best friend. I shake the memory off pushing it far off in my mind. After gathering our things we decide to walk through the forest hoping that it'll give us more shelter. As we walk I feel the wind pick up and it starts to howl. I shiver and hug myself.
"As if Halloween wasn't scary enough we just need a zombie apocalypse on top of it," I roll my eyes trying to make conversation.
"Maybe someone will have candy," Isaiah teases. I shoot him a look
"That was almost funny," I say sarcastically.I'm about to say something else when Isiah stops me and points up. I look up to see a towering building up the hill from me surrounded in a electric fence. All I can do it stand there and gape at it. It seems so perfect.
"Its perfect it has a defense and its huge," I can barely keep my excitement contained as I speak. I grabs Isaiah hand and start towards the building as we approach I see a gap in the fence where we can get through. We both duck under the whole and inspect the place before settling in. It seemed to be a electrical factory.
"This place is amazing it has everything we need and defense system, shelter and absolutely no zombies maybe we'll be ok after all," I say with hope in my voice. Isaiah smiles at me and squeezes my hand. "It even has food the only thing we're missing is water," I point out.
"I'm pretty sure I saw a stream just down the hill from here," Isaiah says as he points outside."Great, let's go I'll grab some containers to fill" I say as I rummage around the empty building. "I found some" I scream as I smile. There was some old canteens leftover from the workers here. The food was probably from survivors too.
"Ok let's head out then I'll lead the way" I look at Isiah and nod. I take in the miracle that's in front of me once more and then we head out. After about 10 minutes of walking we come across a little stream that runs through the middle of the forest. The only sound is the soft hum of the water running over the rocks sticking out. I then hear some rustling leaves and a twig snap. I wonder if it could be an animal. For food possibly. Maybe we could cook it I haven't had a real meal in awhile.
"Stay here I'll check it out," I tell him as he fills up some containers. He mumbles a response to me.
I grab a dull knife from my side as I hear more rustling. I hold out my knife in front of me and turn around in circles. Caution is key, I hope it's just a rabbit.
That's when I'm grabbed from behind and cold lifeless slimy fingers dig into my neck. I scream and kick at it, then a tear is heard as my skin from my neck is torn open and blood pours out everywhere. My scream is caught in my throat as I fall the the ground clutching my throat. My body weak from the lack of blood pouring out of my torn open neck.
The last thing I see is my little sister, a zombie, and my killer towering over me. I was horrified, traumatized. I thought I was gonna be okay.
Then everything goes black around me.
