Chapter 1
The air hang heavy with dust and I couldn’t see my own hand even if it was right in front of my eyes. Not a sound could be heard. I put my hands out in front of me and I gingerly stepped forward. I was stopped by a cold wall. I rapped my knuckles against it and the sound of metal invaded my ears. Following the wall I moved around. I turned a corner once, twice, three times. I soon figured I was in a box. A box.
“No,’ I cried out, “No, no, no, no!” I was sure there was no one to hear me. I was alone. My lungs tightened and I became claustrophobic. I banged on the walls. There had to be a way out. I became more frightened and started to scream. I attacked the other walls with my feet and fists. I ignored the warm trickle of blood on my wrist. The overwhelming urge of escape drove me to insanity. Have to get out, have to get out. These were the only words that tumbled in my mind.
“Where are my parents!” I cried. Then it hit me. I didn’t know my parents or where I live or if I had friends. Pictures invaded my mind, food, the ocean, deserts, meadows, cities.
I knew everything else just not who I was. I had no life. Only one word came to mind. Valerie. That must be my name.
Then, unexpectedly, the ground began to move underneath my feet and there were screams and clangs of metal on metal. I started to scream again. The floor was going to crush me into the ceiling! I didn’t want to die like this. Not here! The minutes dragged by and nothing seemed to happen. I put my hand in the air. I couldn’t feel the ceiling. An ear splitting noise filled the room and brought on another wave of fear. I was so scared, I wanted to puke my guts out. The noise reminded me of squeaky doors and mineshafts and…
“It’s like an elevator!” I called out with understanding. But where was I going? Who would I see? Human instinct took over. What if it was some sort of twisted psychopathic murderer!?
“Oh God, Oh God!” I didn’t want to die. I was too young to die! I searched the walls for a door, a button, anything! I stamped my feet on the ground, trying to find a weak spot to break through or a hatch. Nothing at all. I crammed myself into a corner and desperately wanted to hide.
The seconds turned to minutes which, in turn, turned to hours. Well, not hours but it seemed like forever. Roughly around half an hour later, the room shuddered to a stop. I pushed myself further into the corner. I light pierced the darkness and I was momentarily blinded. Voices floated down to me. I growled. These people can not be trusted. The gap in the ceiling opened up wider and the voices became stronger. I could make out shifting shapes and shadows in the opening. Then there was silence. My breathing sped up as my eyesight adjusted. There were faces peering down at me, all of them with a look of shock on their faces. Then the chorus of voices broke out again.
“Oh my God!” said one.
“It's a girl!” said another.
“I call dibs!” shouted someone. There was a chorous of voices.
"Is she hot?" "What's she look like?" "Has she got clothes!?" WTF. Of course I've got clothes! The noise was deafening. I estimated how high the opening was. It was roughly 4 meters high. I would never be able to jump it. A large boy landed right in front of me and I retreated back to my corner. He stepped towards me.
“Fuck off. If you fucking touch me, I'll have your balls for a trophy.” I said, making my voice as threatening as possible. I must of sounded pretty menacing because he stopped and looked back at the hole. Two more boys dropped into the box, their feet making the metal ring. I was vaguely reminded of a school fight. The voices that surrounded me was exactly like the chants from a crowd around a hallway fight. The three boys began to walk toward me, their expressions determined, cold. I instinctively raised my fists. A boy to the right jumped at me. Acting on instinct, I sent a fist flying to his nose and he dropped like a fly. The other two grabbed me and I kicked the middle one in the balls. He squealed and let go of me. The last boy wrapped an arm around my throat and another one around my waist, trapping my arms in the process. I wriggled and struggled but he had a grip of titanium. His arm wrapped tighter around my throat as I tried to get free.
