She looked beautiful in that dress. It was pristine, pure white material, with lace sleeves and a skirt that flowed just past her heels. Her long, wavy, auburn hair swayed as she sprinted to me, her hazel eyes shining as she smiled. That smile...it was gorgeous. I loved Vanessa. She was my best friend since we were four, and I have no clue what I'd do if I lost her...
Vanessa embraced me in a hug the second she got to me, and I hugged her right back. She had been on vacation in Egypt for a month. Yes, Egypt. Most kids go to Hawaii or Florida, but not Vanessa Whitethorn. She was different. She would write in all capital letters all the time because she thought only the first letter being capitalized was unfair to the rest of the letters in the word. Instead of drawing on paper, she'd draw on her arms and legs with Sharpies. She was the kind of girl that would get up at 3 a.m. to solve a murder mystery. But, even though she solved them, she committed crimes of her own. While she didn't murder anyone, she stole Roland, which hurt just as much. Not that I'd tell her that.
"God, Amelia, I missed you so much!" She gave me an overly enthusiastic smile, panting lightly from sprinting and tucked her hair behind her ear.
"I missed you too, Ness." I flashed a fake smile at her, still bitter about Roland. But I shouldn't be, should I? Vanessa's my friend, and there's more fish in the sea.
We walked through the grass until we reached the lake, and sat at the edge of it. I looked down at the murky water and could see nothing past the surface. I wonder what was under there. What would stay under there?
"So, Amelia, I have to tell you all about the trip! It was so amazing, you have no idea." She smiled at me, and I smiled back. "Oh, and you won't believe what Roland did. When I got off my plane he surprised me with a bouquet of flowers and took me out for dinner at The Golden Sun!"
The Golden Sun used to be me and Roland's place to hang out. To make memories. To laugh. That changed when Vanessa came into his life, and he turned his attention to her. Why? All I ever did was care for him. What did she do that was so great? I'll never know, and now I can't help but clench my fists whenever she talks about him. But as usual, I smiled and told her how romantic that sounds and how amazing it must be.
"Good god, it's so hot out. Can I have some water?" She looked at my bag, which had two bottles of water, two bottles of iced tea, and other belongings.
"Of course!" I smiled at her and handed her a bottle of water, which she thanked me for and drank quickly before smiling at me again. She's always smiling...how does she manage to be so happy and radiant?
"Ness, you gotta tell me more about that trip. Why don't we take a little walk while we chat?" I smiled sweetly and she agreed. "Now, one minute I just need to get something out of my bag..." She nodded and turned to look at the lake as I moved my hand around in my bag, pretending to look for something as I unscrewed the lid to one of the iced teas. I took a deep breath before putting in an excessive amount of sleeping medication, five times the safe amount of dosage.
"Alright. Let's go for a walk, shall we?" I stood up, brushing off the skirt of my dress and smiled at her. We walked right around the rim of the lake, and I listened as she told every detail of her trip. And I listened as she talked about Roland, and strangely enough all of the boys that she talked to in Egypt. I wondered what Roland would say about it until she told me that he didn't care. Every so often I'd drink from my own iced tea, so I'd know the difference and not mix them up.
"That iced tea looks so tasty. Do you have any extras by chance?" She smiled softly at me.
"Yes, actually I have one extra." I smiled widely and handed her the extra.
"Thanks!" She took the lid off, not hesitating before chugging it all. I grinned maliciously as she drank it, but had a pleasant, warm smile when she looked up at me. She carelessly tossed the bottle into the lake, and I hid a smile under a look of shock.
"Vanessa! You aren't supposed to toss plastic in the lake!" I forced myself to sigh, as though it bothered me that she had hidden the evidence for me.
"Too late!" She giggled and turned to me. I shook my head but maintained an amused smile. We continued walking, and as time passed, her speech started slurring and her skin looked paler, with a tinge of blue. She didn't comment on it for the remainder of her talking about her trip, nor did she when she went on to talk about Roland.
"Amelia? Do I look sick at all? I feel...drowsy..." She questioned, her voice dying out as she suddenly fell to the ground. I grinned as I watched her life drain, and listened for a heartbeat. There was none. Only my own. There was no wind, and no movement in the lake. All was still. Then, I saw people in the distance...why not put on a show?
"Help! Somebody, help! Please! Anybody! Please, my friend, she's dying..." I screamed in fake agony, and I thought of Roland, which provided me tears. Someone came rushing over, and I immediately recognized his hazel eyes with that gold ring in it. Roland. Of. Course.
        "What happened?!" He demanded.
"I...I don't know...she just fainted..." My voice was shaky. I think those acting camps paid off. He listened for a heartbeat, and when there was none, his fists clenched and he started crying silent tears...then they changed to violent, loud sobs. I could hear the grief. The pain. The agony. The regret. Was it really worth it? Yes. She stole him, so I stole her from him. She's eliminated from the game now.
Her funeral was small. Her parents attended, her mother drying her tears while her father wiped away the tears of Vanessa's younger brother, Dorian. I attended, of course, and so did Roland. He looked amazing in that tuxedo...I wore a black dress, the back made of lace and the silk black material fitting my body as it reached just past my ankles. When it was my turn to go up to the coffin, I looked at Vanessa, in that white dress with beautiful make-up applied, and her delicate hands folded across her stomach. She looked beautiful in that dress.
