At Hugo's palace, Sofia had given him back the three tiaras and the ruby earrings he gave her, and she told him that Roland is aware that Amber and James know about their mother's fate and that Roland and Miranda were getting divorced before they bring Lorelei back to life.
"Hugo, I really loved these tiaras and earrings—I really did," Sofia sighed, taking her earrings off. "But there's no point in having genuine jewelry if I'm not a princess—I'm sorry."
"It's okay, Sofie, but what I'm really worried about is how we'll be able to see each other," Hugo frowned. "I mean, villagers don't have flying horses, and who knows how long it would take you to get from your shoe shop to my palace? Worst of all, will the guards even let you enter the palace as a villager?"
Sofia thought about that—she wasn't sure if she would even be able to see Hugo when she goes back to being a villager. "I guess you're right," she sighed. "A long-distance relationship would probably destroy us, so I think we know what that means."
It was true—Sofia and Hugo had officially broken up.
"Well, I guess this is the end of our relationship, and do you think we'll be able to do more Protector training?" Hugo asked. "I mean, you gave your amulet to Amber, so you can't use it to call the unicorns to get to the Mystic Isles."
"I guess I'll have to quit being a Protector," Sofia sighed. She took her Enchantlet off and gave it to Hugo.
Hugo and Sofia were sad to end their relationship, and they hugged tightly, trying to fight back their tears.
Later, Sofia returned to Enchancia Castle, distraught that she'll never get to see Hugo again. Roland and Hugo's mother, Queen Samira, showed up.
"Sofia, great to see you," Samira smiled. "How are you?"
"Just fine, Queen Samira," Sofia lied.
"Looking forward to your date with Hugo?" Samira asked.
Sofia froze in shock when she heard that. "My date?" she gulped.
Amber and James heard that—they knew Sofia was going on a date with Hugo this weekend.
"Yes, you and Hugo agreed to see the new play Cinderella Mermaid this weekend, remember?" Roland reminded her.
"We cancelled our date—we broke up," Sofia revealed.
Everyone was shocked to hear that Sofia and Hugo had broken up. They could tell that Sofia was really sad, and Samira was worried about how her son was feeling.
Meanwhile, back at Hugo's palace, his older brother, Axel, was in the library when he heard Hugo crying. He saw his little brother sitting in a chair, sobbing about his breakup with Sofia.
"Baby bro, are you okay?" Axel asked.
"Oh, I'm fine, Big Bro—I just read a really sad book," Hugo lied, cleaning the tears off his face.
But Axel wasn't so sure if that was the reason Hugo was so sad.
That night, during dinner, Hugo's whole family was concerned for him.
"How was your day, boys?" King Garrick asked.
"Fine," Hugo and Axel chorused.
"Hugo, I was at Enchancia Castle with King Roland today, and Sofia said you'd broken up," Samira told Hugo.
Axel and Garrick were shocked to hear this.
"So that's why you were crying today," Axel realized.
"Yes, it's true—we broke up," Hugo admitted sadly.
"Is everything okay, champ?" Garrick asked.
Hugo wasn't sure if it was a good idea to tell his family what was really going on. "Oh, everything is fine," he lied. "Why wouldn't it be?"
"If everything really were fine, then you and Sofia wouldn't have broken up," Axel reminded him.
"Why did you break up in the first place?" Grimtrix asked.
Hugo didn't think it would be appropriate to tell his family the truth. "I can't tell you," he sighed.
"Why ever not?" Garrick asked.
"The royal family is at stake—let's just leave it at that," Hugo said hastily.
But Garrick, Samira, Axel, and Grimtrix really wanted to know what was going on between Hugo and Sofia.
"Sweetie, whatever is bothering you, you can tell us—you have to believe that," Samira said.
"Okay, but can it wait until later?" Hugo asked. "It's a long story."
"Of course," Garrick nodded.
After dinner, Hugo told his family the real reason he and Sofia broke up.
"So you and Sofia broke up because Roland knows that Amber and James are aware of their mother's fate—and they're going to bring her back to life by making a wish in a Wishing Well?" Garrick asked.
Hugo nodded. "I have to admit, I'm really sad to let Sofia go, but Amber and James deserve to have their mother back," he said.
Meanwhile, back in Enchancia Castle, Amber and James decided to have a sleepover in his room. They built a tent of blankets to sleep in.
"I didn't think bringing our mom back would end Sofia's relationship with Hugo," Amber said.
"Me neither," James said. "I mean, I really want to meet our birth mother, but is it worth jeopardizing Sofia's relationship with Hugo? They really loved each other, and how can they get married?"
"I wish I knew," Amber said, crawling under a blanket. "Who knows how everything will be once Mother comes back to life?"
Amber and James fell asleep, thinking about how everything will be. They knew that if Roland and Miranda divorced, Sofia wouldn't have a father anymore, let alone a brother or sister. They had no idea how this would affect anyone.
