Mackenzie's POV

I stormed into the hospital with tears running down my checks.

My footsteps rung in the hallway.

Once I got to the nurses station I'm sure I looked like a mess.

"Hayes Grier?" I asked the nurse behind the computer. She typed a few things and looked back up at me.

"I'm sorry sweety but he's in surgery. If you would like to wait in the waiting room for him to be done then you can do that."

I backed away from the counter and ran out the front door of the hospital.

It was nighttime. The moons light reflected off of the hospital windows.

Since I had no ride here I had to walk home.

Between my eyes being filled with tears and the night being dark and dim, I couldn't really see anything.

Except for a few car head lights that were shining directly in my eyes.

I got to a cross walk and forgot to look.

The last thing I heard was a car beep and brakes slamming.

Then there was blackness.

Flashback//

I had texted Hayes and asked him if he would meet me in the park at 11 pm.

So there I stood, ready to tell him what I needed to.

I was sad that I was about to do this but I can't keep going on like this anymore.

Hayes appeared from the darkness and into the dim glow of the street lamp.

"Hayes," I spoke as he came close to me.

"I need to do this for the best. I'm breaking up with you. I can't keep on letting you cheat on me and tell me what to do. I'm so sorry."

Hayes looked down at his shoes. While he did that I lifted my hand and slipped off my promise ring that he had gave me.

A lump formed in my throat remembering all the good times that we had together.

At one point I had been truly in love with him. And I will never forget that.

"Hayes? Here. Take this back and give it to someone who truly deserves it. Someone who you know you will love for a very long time."

He took it from me and put it in his pocket.

"But I love you Mackenzie. There is nobody else that I would give this to. But if you want to leave me then go ahead. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you."

His eyes had a glossy layer over them.

As I was about to say something I heard a gunshot being fired. A white van was slowly driving by.

Hayes jumped in front of me.

"No! Don't protect me I'm fine! Hayes you don't have to."

I tried forcing him off of me but he didn't budge.

He was to strong.

My forehead broke out into a cold sweat. I was shaking and scared.

A second shot was fired at the light pole right next to us.

"Always remember that I love you Mackenzie."

That was the moment I would never forget in my life.

The final shot was released. That's the moment Hayes turned into complete dead weight and threw me down into the nearest bush.

I felt something coming through my shirt. It was blood from Hayes.

My phone was in my pocket. I fumbled to get it out.

"911 what's your emergency?"

Flashback end\\

I was in a field full of flowers and birds chirping their beautiful songs.

The sky was a bright baby blue and not a cloud was in sight.

When I looked down I appeared to be wearing a strapless, fluffy white dress that was shorter than my fingertips.

I was startled when somebody began to whisper to me.

"Mackenzie. What if you never see Hayes again? How would you feel about that?"

I felt a tear leave my eye and slide down my cheek.

"Who are you and why am I here?"

It was quiet for a minute until I got an answer.

"I can't tell you who I am. But what I can tell you is this; don't ever stop loving Hayes. No matter what happens."
