Alexandra and Justin both woke up early this morning. After being engaged for two months, their wedding day had finally arrived. It was unbelievable. They both got out of bed, in their separate hotels and started to get ready.
Chris, Justin's best man was there to assist him. Justin shuffled around and tried to fix his tie. "How are you feeling, Justin?" Chris asked. Justin shrugged in response. It didn't really answer Chris' question.
Meanwhile, Alexandra was in her dressing room, she had just finished applying her make-up. Clarisse, her best friend assisted her. There was a knock on Alexandra's hotel door. "Come in," Alexandra said. The door pushed open and Justin's mother appeared. She had a smug look on her face.
"You look lovely Alexandra," she sneered.
"Thank you, Anne," she replied.
"Alexandra, dear, I know how happy you must be. I know I was when I was marrying Justin's father. I still do not approve of you for my son. I promise you that you will not be marrying my son today," Anne walked over to the door, "I'll see you at the altar."
Alexandra looked at herself in the mirror. She began to think.
Do I really want to marry Justin?
What if I'm not good enough for him?
What if he loses interest?
"Hey, what's wrong?" Clarisse asked. Alexandra told Clarisse her previous thoughts.
"I'm sure it's just cold feet Alex. It happens to the best of the best of brides," she said while caressing Alexandra's back.
By 12:30 P.M Alexandra and Clarisse were at the church. "I'm going to check if your father and Justin are here. I'll be back soon." Alexandra nodded Clarisse off.
Alexandra took this time to admire her surroundings. The church in Rome was covered with burgundy and gold decorations. It was beautiful; like a scene from a movie. She looked down on her sleeveless dress; beige at the top and flowing into burgundy at the bottom.
She had been to this church once before. It meant a lot to her because it was where her grandfather got married. She and her grandfather were very close.
People started to arrive, Alexandra appreciated the fact that people went out of their way to get to her wedding.
"We're about to start any minute now. Good luck." Clarisse ran up to the other bridesmaids.
The doors opened and the church rose. 'Here Comes the Bride' started to play. Alexandra and her father interlocked arms and started to slowly walk down the aisle.
Justin was astonished. He couldn't believe how beautiful she looked. Justin took Alex from her father's grip and the Pastor Singh began with a prayer. After the prayer was said, Justin intensely stared at Alex's face.
He surely saw the pastor's lips moving, and he heard faint voices, but his eyes couldn't leave his soon to be wife. Alexandra gave Justin's hands a small squeeze and a small smile. His heart was thumping in his chest. Both of their palms were sweaty from their great nervousness. He began to think.
Do I really want to marry Alex?
I've lost so much interest in her.
Do I trust myself with her? No, I don't.
What if I hurt her?
What if...? What if...?
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here, in the sight of God, and in the presence of these witnesses, to join together this man and this woman, in holy matrimony; which is an honourable estate, instituted by God. If any here can show just cause why they may not lawfully be joined together, let them now speak, or else hereafter forever hold their peace."
"STOP THE WEDDING!"
Loud gasps echoed throughout the church.
Surprise! It was Anne, Justin's mother. Only she alone could make such a dramatic entrance.
"Justin, did you ever tell Alexandra that you bumped into your ex-girlfriend, Jasmine? And that you went to see her? Did you ever tell Alexandra what happened?"
Justin bowed his head, "Mom," he growled.
"Justin what is your mother talking about?"
"Jasmine, sweetie- please come out here, will you?" Anne looked behind her. "Come, come." Jasmine's heels clicked on the ground as she made her way beside Anne.
Anne forcefully patted Jasmine's shoulders. "Tell us what happened."
"Well, one day at the grocery store Justin and I bumped into each other. We exchanged numbers and he came to visit me. One thing led to another and I kissed him, and then he kissed back. I told him I loved him."
By the time Jasmine was done talking her head was bowed in shame, so was Justin's. Anne had a victorious smile on her face- she had just basically ruined a relationship. Alexandra's tears were on the brink of falling. She tried to blink them away. The church stood still; everything and everyone was silent.
"Oh. This is a first," Pastor Mulling chuckled to himself. "Justin, is this true?"
Justin nodded, "Yes."
"I know that you and Alexandra have something that most people have. I cannot stop you both from loving each other. It's up to you to continue the wedding."
Justin looked up at Alex but she looked away.
"Alex? Justin?"
Alexandra pursed her lips to say something but then turned and walked out of the church.
Jasmine gripped Alex's hand. "Don't even bother!" Alex snarled.
Without even thinking Justin ran to catch up with Alexandra.
"What were you thinking?" she yelled. They were in a good distance from the church.
"I wasn't. I'm really sorry Alex." He went up and hugged her.
"Get off me!" Alex pushed Justin off and he staggered. He was taken a bit by surprise. Justin sighed and stood beside Alex.
"Alex, you know I was never the type of person to commit to one woman. When I met you I didn't expect you to be around for too long. I told you from day one that I didn't want anything serious- but you did. You stuck around while I was going from girl to girl. You were there for me, and have always been. I appreciate you a lot, and because of you I've changed."
"I remember one particular Sunday I was with you at your house. I slept over the night before. I woke up to the scent of bacon and eggs and since then I've known you were the right woman for me."
"I know I really messed up when I kissed Jasmine. Please find it in your heart to forgive me."
They sat in silence for a long while.
"I'm ready,""What?"
"I'm ready to go back into the church."
Once again, they were both standing at the altar. Anne was displeased.
When the time came, Justin once again proclaimed his love to Alexandra. Now it was her turn. She looked up to Justin and her blood boiled."This is where the chapter ends. Time has come for letting go. I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive you. We were engaged a-and you choose to go ahead and pursue another girl. It looks like you haven't changed your ways after all. I'm sorry, but I can't marry you. But look on the bright side, now you can have your Happily Ever After with Jessica and your mother. Goodbye, Justin."
They both felt as if someone had ripped their hearts out; lifeless. Their other half was no more. It pained them twice as worst just to see the looks on each others' faces. Alexandra turned on her heels and walked out. The Happily Ever After they dreamed of was no more; no longer together with their other half.
