"Have a good afternoon." I said to the customer in a monotone voice. She gave me a scowl for my bored attitude but went on her way. I sighed miserably as a middle aged man walked up pushing one of the bigger trolleys stacked with groceries. I was only doing a two hour shift but it felt like five. The man started to shift the food from his trolley to the counter and I let out another sigh.
"Having a rough day?" he asked casually.
"Yeah, I guess you could say that." I replied.
"Hey, whatever pays the bills right?" giving me a cheeky grin he kept unloading the groceries. I shrugged in response and scanned the items one by one.If I had been on a commercial I'm guessing it would have been painful to watch. An 18 yr old girl with a bored, I don't give a fuck attitude slowly as possible scanning a can of beans. I mean anything was better than working at a grocery store, but at least this was the last customer of the day.
"Have a good afternoon, come again soon." I called to the man and he gave a slight wave as he heaved the trolley to the exit. I cringed a bit and hoped that wouldn't be me one day. Cleaning up my area I put out the No Service At The Moment sign and headed for the locker rooms. I took of the uncomfortable, green uniform and stuffed it in the locker. I struggled with the padlock but finally managed to clip it on and thats when I heard footsteps at the door.
"You won't be needing that anymore." my boss (Sarah) said motioning to the padlock.
"Uh, sorry not sure I understand."
She took out some papers, and I realised what they were before she even started reading them. Customer complaints.
"Lack of enthusiasm, very bored attitude for the workplace and just plain no good customer service " Sarah gave me a 'you know what I mean' look and I sighed slightly. Here we go again.
"Danielle you know what this means right." she talked to me like I didn't know it but she knew I did. "Seriously, like you need to pull your head in. We've had this talk a million times but only now has it gotten this far to have a written complaint."
My heart dropped to my stomach, for I knew what was coming next.
"I know you still need this job but I can't have someone with an attitude like yours working in my store. I don't really know how to put this lightly but, you're fired."
The words rang in my head and my eyes dropped to the floor which was suddenly very interesting.
"I'm ry sorry that it had to come to this, but you will get your end pay slip." she handed me the papers and sighed, with a sort of frustrated look.
"OK, I guess I'm sorry." I simply said, before I grabbed my stuff and walked away, just like the last 2 jobs. Yep, that's right. Three jobs in a row now. Gee mum and dad are gonna be happy, not.*****************
While driving home in my Ford Ranger, (which may I say I got for my 18th birthday and is literally the best thing ever), I had the thought to go to to the stable and ride Harvey. Ah Harvey, my amazing horse who I've had for 3 yrs now and was a rescue case my trainer picked up. We've come through so much together and I could not ask for a more perfect horse. With Harvey being chesnut you'd think hed be boring to look at but he has four white socks and a perfect blaze, beat that! He's a Hanoverian warmblood X, which is perfect breeding for what I wanted to do on him, show jumping. Ever since I got Harvey we have been competing in competitions all over NZ and what makes it even better is that we always place. But I dont think of it as about the ribbons, its what you put into it.
Pulling up in front of the office stable I jumped out and saw Sam, (my trainer), working through the window. I pulled open the door and the little bellrang, making Sam's eyes shoot up.
"Oh, hey Dani." she said with a smile.
"Hey Sam." I sighed and sat down in the overly comfortable chair. Sam must have noticed I was a bit off.
"What's wrong, did you have a good day or not?"
"Ugh not really, I mean sometimes people just overreact when the really don't need to."
Sam suddenly caught on to what I was meaning, she knew about me getting sacked from the other two jobs.
She nodded slowly, "Well enough of that, Harveys just been exercised you could go ride him if you want."
I thanked Sam and headed towards the stables. When I was a few stalls away Harvey stuck his handsome head out and nickered happily."Hey boy." I scratched his blaze and he bobbed his head.
"Its good to know your in a happy mood." I laughed a little and sighed.
"C'mon boy, let's go for a ride I need to be cheered up."Letting the reins hang at Harveys neck I let him stretch out as I took a breath of fresh air. We were on the main trail leading away from the stables in the direction of the lake. The trail forked 3 different ways; left was an awesome gallop track thought the forest, right a quiet easy track for hacking and straight ahead the lake. I gathered up the reins and guided Harvey towards the left trail. He obediently walked on and soon we were enclosed in an archway of pine branches. I suddenly felt the need for speed so I urged Harvey into a smooth canter. He was soon in full gallop as we came out the dark canopy and into the bright summer sun. I looked around the field and saw the cross country jumps scattered over the late mown grass.
I jumped Harvey for about half an hour just having a bit of fun until my phone rang on the way back to the stables.
"Hello?" I said into the phone, not bothering to look at the name.
"Dani when are you getting home, didn't your shift finish like an hour ago?"
"Oh, hey mum. Yea well I dropped by the stable and had a quick ride on Harvey."
"Oh ok, when will you be home your father and I were hoping we could all go out for dinner together?"
"Um, I should be like 10 minutes."
"OK see you then."
"Bye mum."
"Bye sweetie."
I hung up and put my phone back in my pocket. Great. I thought. How was I meant to tell mum and dad about my job now if we were going out for dinner? I mean I don't want to spoil a good night. Oh well I'll save it for tomorrow, I guess.***************
