I woke up having an headache. I got out of bed and reached into my drawer for a pana
dol extra and took it without water. I picked my phone to check the time and pressed the power button, my screen lit up and I squinted my eyes to reduce the light entering my eyes. It is 2:15am. I laid down in my bed staring at the ceiling fan rolling in abandonment. I had told Thomas how I felt and I don't know what he thinks about it, what if he doesn't like me. What if he thinks i am desperate and accepts my proposal out of pity? So many questions ran through my mind and I suddenly felt embarrassed for myself. You are such a fool Abby I thought to myself. Why would Thomas of all people want to date me? I picked my phone the second time and tapped the contacts icon. I was scrolling through my contact distracting myself from my wandering thoughts when my eyes fell on Jessica contact. I know she is super mad at me. I haven't called her since graduation and she didn't call either. She is my friend and I forgot about her. What a terrible friend I am I thought to myself. If ever I and Thomas will be together, I need her on my side. I would call her by day break. I dropped my phone and stared at space till I drifted to sleep."Hello Jess."
"Hello."
"How are you babe?"
"Why are you calling?" OK I get I have been a bad friend but I don't deserve this attitude.
"Girlfriend I am sorry. No vex for me abeg." I said apologetically.
"Am I safe?" She said. "Yes you are safe." I said.
"Hmm" She continued. "It's Thomas right." I smiled and answered. "We talked yesterday and i told him how I felt." She sighed and I continued. "I am still waiting for his answer." She sighed and paused a little. "I am telling you Thomas is not the type you should be with." I knew she was going to discourage me. I guess this was the reason why I didn't think of her. "Why do you think he is bad so much." I questioned feeling bored with this conversation already. "Look Thomas is everything but not a boyfriend. I smiled to myself. I knew this would happen. The usual anthem. I waited and listened as she continued bad mouthing Thomas. I get Thomas was her ex, it didn't work for them both doesn't mean it wouldn't for us both. I concluded she was jealous and I knew how to deal with it. I waited till she finished and I asked after Becca. We talked about general stuffs and she told me Gabriel wanted my number and she needed a permission from me. Thankfully she didn't give him and she isn't getting a go ahead to do that. We fixed a date to hookup and hung up.💮💮💮
I got a job at DPH as an accountant and today being Monday is my first day at work. I wanted to look my very best, not a thing out of place. I got up, had my bath and started to dress myself. I wore a white shevon blouse and a zebra stripped skirt over a black low heels. I wore a simple not too dramatic makeup with a deep pink lipstick on my lips. I wore my favourite GL earrings. I picked my bracelets and bangles and wristwatch and I was set. My siblings had gone to their houses leaving just me here with our parents. I turned to look at myself one last time and winked at my reflection. I got out took the car and off I left for work.
I arrived five minutes earlier and I was glad I beat time and traffic at least on my first day. I got out of the car and walked towards a two glass doors. Through the glass I saw a lady behind a desk attending to customers. I breathed in and opened the door. All heads turned towards my direction and I felt nervous. I walked steadily to the lady behind the desk. She looked short and was fat. She did a bob hairstyle which was over oiled in other to conceal age factor. Her face was all squeezed up and when she saw me she forced a fake smile. Weird. I smiled back as I approached her. "Good morning ma'am." I said "Good morning." She looked down at her computer and carried on doing what ever she was doing. "Excu-" I barely finished when she interrupted. "You can see, there were people before you miss." She looked up at me pointing to a seat at the far corner. "I suggest you take a seat and wait your turn." Oh she mistook me for a customer, how could she not have recognize me. I smiled and continued. "Actua-" "Oh my God!" She looked up at me sternly. " I told you to seat and wait miss." Will she let me finish first? "I work here madam!" I yelled. She looked at me examining me closely. "I am the receptionist and I have never seen you here."
"I am sorry, it is my first day today." I forced a smile. "I was trying to tell you. I am Abigail Jimmy."
She opened her mouth with her brows raised. "Oh! You are the lady from the interview. I am sorry. Wait a minute." She picked the desk telephone and clicked some buttons. "Gideon. Mrs Abigail is here, can you come take her to her office please?" She said simply and hung up. "Someone is coming to take you to your office very soon" she said smiling. "You can wait a little." I nodded and she smiled and went back to the computer. I studied the customers. They were looking well dressed and official. The office was a big one painted dark grey. On the left were two doors, one was open and the other was closed with the description 'staffs only' on it. The receptionist only had a colleague who was the doorman who wore a brown up and down security uniform. Just then from the closed door came a guy. I can tell he was in his middle thirties. He wore a check and a black pant. Well groomed, smart and fine. I guess he is the Gideon. I got up sharply. He got closer talked with the receptionist and faced me flashing his teeth. I smiled back and he gestured for me to follow him.
Behind the door I saw few heads working and typing in their respective desk. They were too busy they didn't notice we walked in. The air con was on blowing ice air to my skin. I followed him observing everybody. No one noticed me or perhaps they didn't care. I didn't like it, I am too dressed to be snubbed.
"I am Gideon, Mr Oshodi's personal assistant." Gideon said snapping me back into reality.
"I-i am Abigail. Your new accountant". I stammered.
We walked down a poorly lit corridor with art paintings on the wall and at the far end was three doors. We walked through a door in the middle that brought us to a room. It was painted sunset yellow with a huge white standing flower vase with all shades of rainbow coloured sticks and branches in it in one corner. Their was a long black book cabinet a black desk and a rotatable office chair and a water dispenser and a mini refrigerator. It wasn't that big a room but beautiful. On the desk stood books and files neatly arranged. I liked it here and I knew it was my office. Like he read my mind. "This is going to be your office. You like?" He stopped to observe my reaction.. I smiled. "Like I have a choice?" He giggled softly. "Well on the left, outside this room is the Mr Oshodi's office. Settle in and come see him in two hours OK." I nodded my head. He smiled and walked out leaving me all alone. I dropped my black Victoria Secret handbag and walked round the room admiring the paintings and drawings on the wall. I have a thing for arts. It was perfect. The colours and settings were sleek. I have a job now and I am a step to becoming an independent woman.
Sorry for the delay.
