Today is a lovely day! It is my birthday! Me and my best friends, Molly and Lydia, are going to the local candy shop. It is their birthday as well so all of us will celebrate at mine - Elisa will act out a play for us. I got this notebook to practice my English but I must remember this day.
Mother wants me to be more ladylike. I tripped and fell into the mud while walking to the candy shop and now she thinks I was messing around! Even worse, Granny slapped me for not tidying up my mess! She frowned at me and said, "Maryam May Roosevelt, get your act together! Be like your Mother!" I don't mind her slapping me. At least I wasn't grounded. It is embarrassing when Molly and Lydia see her slap me like that! But oh well, what could I possibly do? I am just a little pea, as Father says. Father is a lot nicer but I hate him for he owns what he calls slaves. One of the girls, Alisha Marie Grace Hillary Thompson, is my age and works on my farm. Lydia doesn't like Alisha because of her skin while Molly is fond of her but is not allowed near people of colour, which I think is just silly! Anyways, Alisha and her Mother Susan do our laundry while the boys do the "hard work". I must go now. I'll be back.
