Chapter 1: Witch Of Christmas

Christmas was always enjoyed by most people in the whole world. In the night of December 24, everyone started to decorate trees and put lights on them, some hang socks on their fireplace, waiting for Santa to come down the chimney. And after that day, everything becomes silent. Christmas ended in just a night, and Santa is nowhere to be seen.

But in Italy, the Christmas didn't end that fast. January 6 is the day everyone was waiting for. Day and night, it was filled with celebration and enjoyment.

Epiphany Day, as they called it, also known as the 'Little Christmas'. During the night of this holiday, everyone was excited to go on their beds, especially the children, and couldn't wait to get their reward from them from their readily hanged socks on their room. They were so excited that they didn't even want to sleep, troubling their parents on how to stop them.

But their parents always win, and they ended up fallen asleep, quietly and peacefully, missing the chance to witness them go inside their house.

Most of the house turned off their lights and all of Italy was almost covered with silent darkness, and the crickets were the only noise. The trees surrounding the towns, faded in the dark. The only part that can be seen were the leaves on the top because of the bright moon shining above them.

In the dark horizon, trails of glowing gold dusts traveled in the air and disappeared after few seconds. The dusts made a trail of waves and loops, big and small, like the rails in the roller coaster ride.

"Woohoo!", a female voice shouted under the moon, enjoying what's she been doing all this time.

It was clear right now that the gold dusts that appeared in the sky, was actually coming from something that you didn't expect to see in the night.

A broom. Yes, from a magical broom that flies in the sky on its own will. And on the top of it was the person every Italian was talking about, every children was wanting to see, and every tree was seeing during the night of this special day.

"Yeah!", she continued shouting as she enjoyed the roller coaster ride.

In the stories, she was being described as an old woman with tattered dress and shoes, wearing an orange shawl on her head, riding on a flying broom. But what they didn't know, is that the person they imagined her to be is not her actual appearance.

It's true that she has a shawl and a magic broom, but there's an additional pointed black witch hat on her head.

And she isn't an old lady at all, but a young maiden wearing a yellow green upper clothes with long sleeves, a long black skirt with red-and-green apron covering the front part of the skirt, and a short red cape on the shoulders. She has a long hazel brown hair that reaches on her thighs and it was being tied on the buttocks.

She has the silent beauty but because of her carefree attitude, it wasn't usually noticed by those who have met her.

After minutes of flying in the air, they finally landed on the roof of a house. Carrying a bag full of candies, chocolates, and other goods that was rumored to make anyone who will ate it to be pure, she went off the broom and raise her arms up in the air to stretch them.

She let out a sigh and turned around to see her broom.

"It's been months since we got out from the lair. Right, Julius?"

The broom suddenly moved with itself and started to make gestures that shows its agreement to its master.

"Now, let's see...", she kneel down on the roof and stared at it for minutes.

She actually had the ability to see through any walls, and anyone's intentions. She finally found the two children sleeping quietly on their beds. She searched on their minds and all of a sudden, she raised her head and her eyes widened of disbelief.

"Mamma Mia! These children... their behavior... their dreams...", she tried to see on their minds again and formed a wide grin on her face. "It's... incredible!"

She suddenly rushed to the chimney and jumped at it, leaving her confused broom behind. Still carrying the bag, she sneaked in to the children's room and tried to keep her steps as quiet as a cat. She tiptoed her way towards the hanging socks in the walls.

She grabbed some candies on her bag and put plenty of them in each sock. As she put some, she giggled because of amazement.

"Good children received good rewards. And pure children received pure goods. Haha!", she shouted loudly and all of a sudden, a light flashed towards her direction.

She stopped from laughing and was stunned at her position, she slowly turned around and saw the two children that was woken up because of her laughter.

"Wait! Are you...?", the boy who is older than the other kid, asked her. She didn't know how to answer them and just laughed out loud. Now, because of her carelessness and excitement of the two children, her true identity was being revealed. Then all of a sudden, she noticed her broom coming towards the open window beside her.

"Ahahaha! Hello! Buona sera, children! Happy Epiphany Day! And I... gotta go.", As she shouted those words, her broom sneaked in to the house at a fast speed and caught her. They went into the chimney and up the roof.

"Ciao Ciao!", her voice echoed into the chimney as she bid goodbye to the two children who witnessed her.

"Woah! No way. It's...", the boy was amazed by what he saw and turned around to see the other kid.

"... La Befana, a young one."

The lady they called La Befana flew away with her magic broom.

"Rome, clear! Next stop, Venice.", she said and they started having the roller coaster ride again.

Epiphany Day, as they called it, also known as the 'Little Christmas'. Everyone was waiting for this day and this night. Every children was excited to sleep and get the rewards from her.

She is La Befana, the Witch of Christmas.
