SEVERAL MONTHS LATER

I scattered the recently burned ashes across the soil filled casket within the spelled circle, sucking in a deep breath and pushing down my fear as I took my one shot in bringing Esther back to life. "Fian en che en kanu! Fian en che en kanu! Fian en che en kanu! Fian en che en kanu!" All flames were extinguished in a second. The silence became deafening as I took a shaky step back, my entire body flinching when a hand punched through the hardened soil. I moved quickly as the second hand came into view, gripping the spelled chains and binding them to the witches wrists. I exhaled in relief when she stared around in confusion, "Hello, Esther."

"Adelina, h-how are you alive?" I offered her coverage while she struggled to stand from her soily surroundings.

"I have no idea. I thought you could've shone a light onto that more than me."

"Why am I alive?"

"Don't play dumb. The Other Side is still very much intact, and witches talk."

"Dahlia..."

"Bingo! Your dear Freya woke up a few days ago, so I have a feeling Dahlia will soon show up to collect her promise."

"Hope."

"So you have been watching."

"There's not much else to do when your dead--"

"Don't give me that look. You killed me straight after, we're even."

"Why do you need me alive then? You know everything you must do--"

"It's your blood that'll create the weapon, not Freya's. Besides, I felt guilty being the one to rip your heart out, and I know you despise vampires--you despise me! But--...I'm sorry that I killed you..." The silence attempted to strangle me, "I'll get you to the compound--let you clean up and collect that blood sample so Freya can create the weapon." I turned sharply, aiming for the tomb's entrance in expectation she'd follow wearily--her voice made me freeze.

"I'm sorry for killing you too..."

"What?" I whipped around with a frown, "W-what did you just say?"

"I've been watching, remember(?) Watching your more successful attempt at atoning my sins than I could. You can cure them...You know, in my one-thousand-years of torment, I never even considered that. You've eradicated half the vampire population in general, and--the killing...you've stopped all you have come into contact with from killing."

"Because I've never wanted anyone to die. I meant it when I said I didn't want to kill you, it wasn't a ploy because I knew I had the upper hand anyway."
