A complicated heart.

I should have never let him go…

I should have helped him fight…

Those were her thoughts as she kneeled by his side. She paid no heed to the blood that stained her clothes, but only the body that lay motionless, surrounded by the act of death. The dirty earth was soiled by the salty drops of her eyes and the silent air was interrupted by the shivering sobs. She knew, by the presence of Death whose skull was covered with his black hood and in hand held the halted hourglass, that it was time. Time to let him go…but she couldn’t. Not for a few more minutes, please. She cradled his head in her arms, letting her regret fall as tears.

“A rose among thorns,” he used to call her.

But she was now merely a rose that lost its petals. During the peak of nightfall, she was forced to watch as Death ripped his soul from his body, leaving just the empty shell. With eyes dried without any more tears, and a heart now torn, it was then that her sobs slowed and reality finally dawned.

He won’t ever wake nor stand.

She won’t ever see his smile, nor feel his hugs and much less hear his words of comfort.

She jerked forward, eyes wide with surprise and they instinctively began to water, though nothing fell. Through wistful hope, she felt it. She knew it was. She recognized his touch though a soul was all he was,

Of a final hug.

~*~

She had been a walking shell of what used to be. There had been many moments where a knife in her hand was to be plunged deep between her ribs as a final strike but the knowing of to waste the life he died to give her ate at her mind like a bug she could never kill. Otherwise, there were only two things that occupied her mind,

Death or Life?

She sat at the edge of the clouds, feeling the wind fluttering her golden tinted wings. Was it not to be to be living with him instead of walking through the crashing ocean by herself? At the colours of the glaring auburn sunset she looked away, shutting her eyes from its dark beauty. It simply reminded her of his death for during the setting sun was when he died, that she stood by frozen to the very core. At the chill of the growing night, she reopened her eyes that were evidently glistening wet with unshed tears. Even so, she fought to keep them at bay. The sadness that shook her very soul had her conflicted and her mind shaking with thoughts. At the warmth of a presence sitting next to her and the one handed hug brought another bout of fresh tears. Memories resurfaced once again as he would always hug her like this. Noticing the sight of her glistening orbs, he pulled away with a manner of apology.

“Was it to be, to live a life with half a heart and sadness lurking at every shadowed corner? Was fate really that cruel, to deprive me of the gift of happiness?” she questioned, shaking her head to rid the tears.

Her reply was silence as the young man thought. “It may have been a test, a test so cruel that fate was willing to give. Fate may have wanted to watch the broken soul in the shell of a girl, to see how she would have lived to steer her boat in the oceans.”
