After reading the second page, I laid back in my bed. This couldn't be my dad. How could it possibly. This was a man who had thoughts and who sounded like he actually cared about how other people felt instead of just trying to get a promotion. I looked at the page again. It was his handwriting but it felt like a different person. I heard mom's footsteps and hid the book under my pillow. She came in with a plate of chocolate chip cookies.
"Hey Tom. Do you mind taking this over to the new neighbors?"
She was wearing her nurse's scrub with her hair pulled back in a low ponytail which meant she was about to leave for work. I sat up.
"Yeah sure."
She looked at me. "Are you ok?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"I don't know. You just look a little...I don't know."
"I'm fine mom."
"Is it your dad."
"No." I lied " I'm fine.really."
She walked over and handed me the cookies before kissing me on the forehead. " there's pancakes if you want some but you should take the cookies over there while there warm. Tell them it's a housewarming gift."
"Ok." I said.
When she left I got dressed and headed next door. When I knocked I waited a few moments before I heard the sound of footsteps. The door opened. It was the girl from yesterday. I was now able to get a better look at her. Her hair was a light red and her eyes were hazel with flecks of gold. There was a sprinkle of freckles across her nose and cheeks. She smiled.
"Hi."
"Hey." I said
She looked up at the window from my house then back at me. "Are you the boy that I saw yesterday."
I nodded and could feel myself blush even though I didn't know why.
"Yea. That was me."
It was quiet for a moment before another girl appeared at the door. She looked a little older than the first girl. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail and instead of hazel eyes they were blue. She looked down at the cookies which I had forgotten about.
"Oh." I said "my mom made these. It's a housewarming gift."
The older one took the plate.
"Tell your mom that we thank her tons" She took a bite of one of the cookies. "And tell her these our delicious."
She walked away leaving me with the girl.
"What's your name?" She asked
I felt so stupid. Why didn't I tell her that already.
"It's Thomas but everyone calls me Tom."
"Ok Thomas who everyone calls Tom. My name is-"
She was interrupted by somebody calling her.
