CHAPTER IV
DESIREÈ
Desireè moved along the dark, damp hallway towards the outer door. She and Carter had split after leaving the cell, he took the right, she took the right. They'd rendezvous at the hay barns. Carter had given her the first guard's switchblade and his pocketknife- after a moment of hesitation. She couldn't figure that boy out. He didn't remember barely anything of his past, and yet, she didn't think he would share even if tortured to the brink of death. That boy......that boy that boy that boy! She knew that he recognized the pocket knife, but he didn't know from where or why. And it hurt him. It hurt him to be so close, yet so far. That he couldn't do anything about it. That all he could do was just go with it. He had no judgement as to what he believed in or what he despised. The dictator could tell him that killing everybody that threatened him and he wouldn't know any better........... The thought stopped Desireé in her tracks. If that were to happen......and if the things said about him were true.......
"My God!! That would......that would........ohhh nooo.......!!!" she spoke aloud. She made a silent oath then and there.
'Carter, I swear that I will protect you to the best of my abilities. I shall defend you, in battle and in peace. In physical combat, mental, and verbally.' As she finished her silent oath, a noise behind her sent her whirling around and into a ready stance. It was Carter!!! "What are you doing?!?!?!?!?" She said in a hushed voice.
"My route was blocked. No way through. So I came with you, rather than wait."
"Hrrrmmmm........that's odd. How far down was it before it got blocked off?"
"I don't know......about 100 meters, I'd say."
"Interesting....."
"Why is it so interesting? Why is everything I say about this place interesting to you?"
"Thought processes. How you analyze things. It helps me judge you." she replied.
"This might interest you. DUCK!!!!!!" Carter dove and grabbed Desireé on his way down, pulling her along for the ride, and behind a wall of an adjacent corridor that led to what appeared to be another cell block- it was empty, thankfully.
"WHAT THE -"
"Shhh!!!" Get your knife out!!" A guard had spotted them and had started to raise his weapon. "Wait for him to round the bend and stab him in the leg! Then I'll knock him unconscious with my pistol butt."
"Kay." The guard rounded the curve and immediately screamed in pain, but the scream was short-lived. Carter and Desireé had succeeded.
"Quickly. The scream will not have gone unheard. We have to get away from here."
"Agreed." she replied. The duo made their way down the hall and took a sharp left, down another hall and out into the courtyard.
