Ireland, 2014. But not as you would know it.
We are ruled over by an unknown person, the Monarch. Shrouded from the public eye even their gender is a secret. Society is divided, the prosperous live happily in the shining metropolis of Dublin while the rest of the country sinks into poverty and decay.
Slums stretch for miles out around Dublin, crammed with two million wretches. Policing it all are the Monarch Guards, soldiers who upkeep the law of the Monarch. Brutality follows them. Those who break the laws are tortured, executed or sent to prison camps. The camps are shelterless and fenced in. Supplies are scarcely provided and the criminals fend for themselves or starve.
These places are called Compounds.
