Hope you enjoy this one as it's the last one-shot of a S1 scene that I'm doing!
The air was damp with rain and the moisture was making Clarkes hair break out in endless curls. With frustration , she ran a hand through her hair; her braid was coming loose from the number of times she had done the action in the past few hours.
Her eyes gazed across the serenity of the forest before her as she clenched her fists in impatience; concern beginning to eat away at her. It seemed that the forest was deserted, though Clarke knew better than to be naive in a time of war.
A war they had stoked the minute the bridge had been blown to pieces. No doubt taking some Grounder lives with it.
Bellamy's presence next to her was a little comfort since she knew she wasn't in this alone. Yet, there was a nagging feeling she couldn't shake; something foreboding on the horizon. And it wasn't just the threat of a Grounder attack.
Bellamy watched as Clarke settled into deep thought. Her face was amassed with frown lines and the solemn look in her eye told him that the weight of responsibility was resting a little too heavily on her shoulders. Clarke felt responsible for everything nowadays, even if being co-leaders meant that the burden of keeping their people alive was supposed to be shared. The look in Bellamy's eyes softened to sympathy as his eyes scanned the features of Clarke's face; unconsciously taking in each detail.
From the outline of her nose to graceful curve of her neck. Now, it seemed that Bellamy finally understood why Clarke loved to draw so much.
"It's been two days. Maybe the bomb at the bridge scared them off for good?" Clarke spoke suddenly, breaking their silence. She had meant it to sound positive but even she knew with the little hope she had buried in her, that she didn't sound convincing.
Bellamy turned to face her before giving her a look.
"You really believe that?" he asked, already knowing the answer. He could see it in her eyes as he took a step closer to stay out of earshot of the other campers.Clarke looked up to meet his eyes before her gaze returned gravely to the forest before her. "No," she replied. She felt her insides twist in pain.
"They're coming."Bellamy kept his eyes on Clarke as he felt a stab of concern for the girl in front of him. There wasn't a single moment of the day that she didn't seem troubled while he wondered briefly, where the carefree, laughing girl from Unity day had disappeared to. His feet shifted his weight from side-to-side as he gazed at Clarke.
Clarke's eyes wandered over the forest floor before she felt the gaze of two brown eyes taking in her features. She wasn't quite sure what Bellamy was doing so she avoided eye-contact. Maybe he was as lost in thought as she was since she could see the way he stooped a little more nowadays. The burden of saving their people was heavy enough to make them both stoop from the exhaustion of bearing it together.
Suddenly Bellamy's hand reached out to graze his fingertips against Clarke's arm. The contact snapped Clarke out of her reverie as she turned to face his expression which resembled a mixture of seriousness and excitement. Maybe with a dash of the cocky attitude she knew he still held on to.
"Jasper thinks he can cook up some more gunpowder if he gets some sulfur," Bellamy began as he started his descent from the hilltop. Clarke fell into step beside him as they occasionally bumped shoulders while taking care not to slip on the steep surface. "...and Raven says she can turn that into landmines. So be careful where you step," he added, a smile spreading across his face.
Clarke's heart lightened slightly at Bellamy's attempted humour before she let herself have a small chuckle in response. "Ha! Funny."
Bellamy's smile grew as the sound of Clarke's laugh satisfied the wanting, he had had to cheer her up. After the gruesomeness of the sickness and the burial of 14 bodies, he knew that hearing Clarke laugh and smile at his joke gave him the reassurance that she hadn't lost all hope, despite the ordeals they had suffered.
