Loves Burden
The dark surrounded us, but Lydia was already asleep. She lay there peacefully, though I knew that when she would awake, peacefulness would be the last thing I would see in her. The fear she felt was so prominent, and I hated it. The past two days I've done everything she's asked of me, hoping that maybe, just maybe, she would change her mind about me.
Walking outside, into the moonlight, I looked around at the eerie woods. I knew what was coming, and it wasn't good. Derek had failed, and I have yet to communicate with him since I'd been brought back from the dead by Lydia. I knew what had to be done. I would have to let Lydia go…go back to Jackson. I never imagined I would, or could ever have feelings for her, but they snuck up on me and sunk their teeth in deep. Torn between selfishness and righteousness, I had to make a decision. Walking back in the house, I strolled over to where Lydia slept. I admired her beauty, her strength, and her intelligence before I went to sleep.
Waking to the sound of crying I bolted right up and looked in every direction to find Lydia, but I could not see her.
"Lydia," I called out, keeping my voice calm, though inside I was worried.
"What?" Lydia whispered, and I walked around the corner into the other room and found her sitting on the ground.
"Why are you crying? And sitting on the ground?" I asked gently as I sat beside her.
"Why do you think?" She snapped, but then fear entered her eyes, "When are you going to let me go?" she whispered softly.
"Soon," I responded, "In fact, go home today. But, when I need you, you will comply with what I ask," I warned.
She nodded and I stood up and put my hands over my face in frustration before offering a hand to help her up. Lydia looked at me trying to see if it was a trick before taking my hand. She stood up and took a couple steps from me, keeping space between us. I just stood there as she examined me, keeping her eyes on me the whole time she backed away from me, searching for an exit with her hands.
"It's over there," I motioned slightly, not wanting to frighten her.
She nodded and gulped as her hand clasped around the doorknob, turning it she pushed back and the door flung open, and she ran for it. I walked to the doorway and watched her run. I knew I couldn't just let her wander the woods with all the werewolves around and, not to mention, the Kanima. Gritting my teeth, I knew I had to reach Stiles. Rolling my eyes and shaking my head I left my house and headed through the woods to his high school. On my way there I caught a familiar scent; Derek. Taking a deep breath I continued on. Reaching the school, I looked out from the woods to the lacrosse field, an early morning practice, how convenient. I saw Scott sniffing the air and looking around, Stiles caught on to his behavior and followed Scott's gaze to where I was hidden in the woods.
"McCall! Get out on the field!" Coach called.
Scott got up, but whispered for Stiles to keep his eyes on the woods before he headed to the field. Stiles looked nervous as he chewed on his glove for a moment, and then glanced my way. I walked out and revealed myself, and Stiles eyes went wide and looked around for Scott but he was out on the field, to busy from the coach yelling orders at him. I walked up to Stiles quickly and stayed behind the benches.
"Stiles, I'm not here to hurt you. If you care about Lydia, ditch school today. She is out in the woods. Find her," I said and knew Stiles heard every word I said from his heartbeat racing faster. I retreated back to the woods now that my job was done. I saw Stiles contemplating what to do before he got up and left practice. Happy, I headed back to the house. I stopped along the way, and grabbed some food. I thought about Lydia…how she and Jackson had this connection…a connection that I would never have with her, and it enraged me. As much as Stiles annoyed me, I felt for him. He and I would never have Lydia Martin's heart because it already belonged to Jackson. Heading back to the house, Derek's scent was strong. Walking in cautiously, his back was to me, and he was angry. He threw a glass shard at me, but I caught it.
Derek was in no mood to play games, and when I walked toward him and said I wanted to talk, he threw my against the stair banister. He grabbed me and began beating on me. Once I talked sense into him, we talked without having any violent outbursts. I told him of my plan with Lydia. He seemed skeptical, but I assured him it would work. He told me that the lacrosse finals were tonight. I wasn't sure why he mentioned it. I told him we had to worry about the Kanima. Derek rolled his eyes at me in annoyance and I shrugged as I grabbed my laptop from the stairs.
After a while of research, it was soon nightfall and Derek called Scott and was talking to him on the phone when I found a good link on the Kanima. It turned out Jackson was only in his Beta stage for the Kanima. We were running out of time, and I told Derek that we needed to meet Scott half way. Arriving t the specified location, I stayed back while Derek made his entrance, running up fast and flipping over and landing on all fours. A little dramatic if you asked me. I watched as Derek ordered Scott and the new werewolf, Isaac, around. Derek started to reveal Gerard's plan, and Mr. Argent refused to believe him until Gerard showed himself. Derek attempted to kill Jackson but Jackson was quicker and got Derek in the chest and threw him across the room. I waited on the sidelines, trying to find the perfect moment for Derek and I to work our plan. Hopefully Stiles will get Lydia here soon…or else we could fail. Derek, Scott and Isaac were up and trying to fight the Kanima but only Derek stayed up, as the Kanima brushed Scott and Isaac off and focused on Derek. The Kanima took a swipe at Derek, and Derek fell, grasping his chest.
Allison appeared out of nowhere and was about to kill Derek when Scott interrupted her, and Gerard's Kanima took Allison by the throat. Gerard revealed that he had cancer, and that he would do anything to survive, even if it meant killing his family and turning into the supernatural. I watched closely as Scott walked over to Derek and grabbed him, pulling him up. I watched in disbelief as Scott held Derek's mouth open and forced him to bite down on Gerard. Gerard grinned until he noticed that he was bleeding black, which was unnatural. Gerard soon fell and puked black guck until he fell to the ground.
I and everyone underestimated Scott's ability and intelligence. Scott had put wolfsbane in Gerard's pills. Gerard's last demand was for the Kanima to kill us all. Suddenly a car burst through the wall, and sure enough, it was Stiles and Lydia. I watched in amazement as Lydia got out of the car and stood up in front of the Kanima, and called Jackson's name, holding up a key. Jackson stared at her and the key and after a couple moments started changing back into his human self, as I had hoped. Derek and I knew our moment was coming. Jackson walked backwards, taking in the scene, and Derek and I jumped out and stuck our claws into Jackson from the front and behind.
Letting go at the same time, Jackson fell to his knees, into Lydia's arms. She whispered "I do, I do still love you," as she cried and held an unconscious Jackson in her arms. She lay him down, and I watched in pain. Knowing I can never have her, but also in pain from seeing her so distraught. Suddenly Jackson's claws twitched and he opened his eyes and stood up slowly and raised his head and growled. Slowly turning human again, he laid eyes on Lydia and they embraced.
I saw Stiles crying, and I felt his pain. In that moment, we both knew we would never have her, ever. I didn't cry. I couldn't do that in front of Derek. But inside, the pain was immense, but if I loved her, I knew I should be happy for her if she was happy…but that's the hardest thing when your hearts just been broken. Leaving the scene with Derek and Isaac we headed silently back to the house. Isaac walked up to the house and it hit me that Derek had been keeping secrets from his pack. I smirked and explained, what Derek had not, to Isaac- that Derek was making his pack quickly because he knew that he was drawing attention from other Alpha's. Isaac soon saw the symbol on the door, and Derek explained that a pack of Alpha's was already here, looking for him and his pack. I knew it was going to be dangerous, and so that day I vowed that I would do whatever it took to keep Lydia Martin safe and happy, which meant keeping Jackson alive too.
