Lauren

Late September,  2011

Hurry up and wait

So close but so far away

Everything that you've always dreamed of

Close enough for you to taste but you just can't touch

“Lauren? Can I talk to you a minute?” I looked up from gathering my books, and saw my English teacher looking at me.

“Go ahead. I’ll catch up,” I said to my friend Naomi. She raised an eyebrow, and left the room.

“What’s up, Mr. Mason?” I said, coming up to my teacher’s desk.

“Do you have a minute? I know you have to catch your bus, but…”

“No, you’re good. Being a senior means I get to park my car here.”

“Ahh, right. Well, there’s this contest being put out by Seventeen Magazine. It’s strictly for high schoolers. You have to submit an article, and the winning one gets published in their magazine, and gets to intern for them this summer. If you’re interested, I think you have what it takes to win.” He opened his desk drawer and handed me a thick packet. I took it from him and looked at the application cover.

“What does it have to be about?”

“Instructions are all in there, but it can be about any topic that could be in Seventeen.” I thanked him, and hurried out to meet Naomi.

“Dude. I don’t think I can do this. What would I even write about?”

“Laur, you’re a brilliant writer. You can do it, I know you can. I’ll lend you some of my  sister’s back issues from when we were little. Maybe you can get some ideas from that.”

“Thanks Naomi. Pick you up tomorrow morning?”

“TGIF!” Naomi leaned over and gave me a quick hug, her long brown hair flying around her face. She leaned over and grabbed her messenger bag from the back seat and disappeared into her house. Just then, my phone beeped.

Lauren, I have some chores for you when you get home. Xoxo –mom

I sighed. ‘Some chores’ always meant the ones my sister didn’t want to do. Guess I’m not going home any time soon.

I drove downtown, looking for a quiet place to sit and do homework. I pulled into the parking lot of a trendy little restaurant- bar. At night, it was a popular celeb hang out, but during the day, they served coffee and appetizers to locals. It was usually quiet until about 8, which gave me 5 hours of prime study time.

I sat down at the bar and pulled my history book out of my bag. Second week of school, and my AP History teacher had already signed a 40 page chapter.

“Can I get you anything?” asked the girl behind the bar. She looked amazing. She was wearing a strapless dress that was black on the top with a girly bow, with a flowy peach and orange skirt. Her name tag read Mikaela.

“I’ll have a hazelnut iced coffee, please.” I reached in my bag for a highlighter, and my Seventeen application fell out onto the floor.

“Is this yours?” a male voice with a thick accent said.

“Yeah. But you may as well throw it out. I’ll never win that contest. I don’t have any story ideas, and it’s due in a month.” I said, trying to read the chapter intro.

“Well,  I think I have a story for you.”

“Oh yeah?” I asked, finally looking up from my textbook. I saw a pair of bright green eyes looking into mine.

“Hi, I’m Harry Styles.”

“So, you can really get me an interview with Niall?”

“Yeah! He’d love to do it! Sorry we can’t all help you out, but we have to fly back for an awards banquet. Niall is staying in LA though for his cousin Katie’s birthday party. So he’s the only one who will be around after Saturday.”

“I still can’t believe you’re leaving so soon.” The pretty waitress said, walking around the bar and perching herself on Harry’s lap.

“Oh, you two are a couple? That’s so sweet! I’m Lauren, by the way. I can’t remember if I actually told you that or not.”

“Mikaela. And yeah, we’re sort of together. We aren’t really labeling things yet.” She replied, turning to Harry and touching noses with him. He smiled, then turned back to me.

“Put your name and number into my phone. I’ll give Niall all the info, and have him call to set up a meeting with you sometime next week. I’ll make sure he sets up the meeting.”

“Thank you! So much. You have no idea how much this means to me Harry!”
