Happiness, you had felt it once upon a time. When you found out Klaus loved you as well, you genuinely thought you would never be happier, and as did he. Dumb little dates to McDonald's at three in the morning when the two of you were still up, moments spent comforting one another after particularly rough days and nights, you cherished it all. Your relationship moved quite fast, and before you knew it you were were sharing an apartment, just happy in one another's company. Oh how you wish those days hadn't ended.
He'd been acting strange for weeks now. Leaving at odd hours, gone days at a time. You'd learned not to question it; not only would he dodge the questions anyway, it would only hurt more to know the truth that you had already feared for so long now, so you just continued on with life, doing your best to ignore it.
That is, until you couldn't ignore it anymore.
Klaus had gone into the bathroom an hour ago and hadn't come out since, and while you could assume he was just wasting his life away as usual, curiosity got the better of you when he didn't emerge.
Carefully, you reached a hand out to knock on the door, your knuckles lightly tapping the wooden surface three consecutive times before stopping. "Klaus...? You okay in there? It's been an hour."
Silence.
Letting out a sigh, you carefully began to craft your next words as not to seem desperate. Truthfully, you were getting quite sick of all this and just wanted it to be over; still, there was a part of you that cared for the self-destructive man on the other side of the door, and you were determined to get a response. "Listen, I just want to know if you're okay, that's it. Ask me and I'll go, but I'm not leaving until I get a response."
Again, there was nothing.
How long would he continue to do this? How long would he continue to mooch off of you while you were left in the dust, not important enough to even be looked at, let alone talked to. Anger and resentment began to swell in your chest, replacing the dread you had felt moments ago. Anger for the days wasted away wondering where he was, resentment for the man that had thrown away all the love you had endlessly given him in favor of lord knows what.
Your throat began to burn as tears welled in your eyes. "Dammit, Klaus! I'm sick of you doing this shit all the time! It's one thing to take your goddamn addiction out of the house without telling me, it's another to cater to it in our own home and straight up ignore me!"
As you intently waited for some sort of response, a pit began to form in your stomach. There was absolutely no sound from the other side of the door, not the shuffle off feet, not the sound of wind through an open window, nothing... just dead silence.
"Klaus...?"
You rattled the door a few times with a shaky hand, but found it locked as expected. Oh god...
Trying to swallow the lump in your throat, you stared at the door in horror as hot tears dripped down onto your clothes. A sob caught in your throat, knees buckling as you placed one hand over your mouth and the other on the door.
"Klaus, please!" you pleaded to yourself, voice straining with desperation, "Open the door!"
No amount of begging or sobbing, however, would make that door open. Chest tightening, your breathing began to quicken and became erratic. With trembling hands you quickly pulled out your phone and attempted to call for help, choking out words through shaky breaths, but it was no use. You slid down the door, hugging your legs to your chest and sobbing into your knees. You were too late.
