•FLASHBACK•

"Appa!" The little girl cried as the wind howled through the air. "I'm scared!"

"Stay strong, my angel." Her father said, as they ran and ran.

In the distance they heard the gunshots and the yelling. The soldiers were following them. Trying to take them back to that hellhole of a home. Her father grabbed her and carried her, running and running and running.

The girl looked back and saw the soldiers holding the gun, as her father hustled through the trees and grass.

Then they came to the field.

The field with bombs hidden so well, you would've never believed the sign that said "Beware, Explosives in the area."

Her father ran and ran while carrying her precious daughter.

The father stared at the ground, making sure not to take the wrong step. But the soldiers are catching up to them. One of them unfortunately took the wrong step.

*BOOM*

The explosion struck the land and the girl couldn't see. Still in her fathers arms, the girl watched as the soldier fell lifelessly. We could make it!, she though.

But there were men guarding the gate.

The father cursed under his breath, and spotted a river in the distance. There was a wooden dock, and a boat was there, just waiting to be used.

The father ran sideways away from the guards and soldiers and towards the wooden dock. He crossed the slanted bridge to the boat and placed her little girl in there. The man jumped in and grabbed the handle, rowing the boat as fast as his skinny hands could. The stream of the river became quicker, and as if god was on their side that day, the soldiers couldn't catch up with them. Faster and faster they went.

"Appa." The girl exclaimed. "Are we free? Free from the terrors of our home? What will become
of our fate?"

"We won't know for sure, but we can't spend our time on the past or future. We must focus on the present."

"But why?" She asked.

The father looked at her confused. Then he understood.

"Why is our people treated differently from those of other countries? Why does our government not care for us?" She asked.

The father looked at her with a smile. Not one with happiness, but one with sorrow.

"That." He softly spoke. "Is a question even I cannot answer." He let go of the handle for a moment to stroke his daughters hair.

"Your hair, as beautiful as your mothers. She would want you to live a better life. Think of her as we cross this narrow channel."

"Alright." The girl politely.

The river ended up to the ocean.

•-HOURS LATER-•

They've reached a small village surrounded with beautiful rice fields, and a group of men happened to spot them.

"Help!" The father shouted as the men dashed through the water and grabbed the man and little girl off the boat. The boat crashed into a boulder and sinked.

"Where are you from? You are not from this village." One of the men asked.

"North Korea." The father replied.

The men looked at each other. Then they looked back at him.

One of the men, looking like the oldest, patted the man on the shoulder and ruffled the girls hair.

"Alright. Welcome to our side! Feel free to sleep with us for the night, then tomorrow we'll get a train for you and your daughter to Seoul." The oldest looking man spoke.

"Thank you! Thank you so much!" The father said, and the daughter bowed. Then he picked her up, and lumbered through the water and up the hill to the village.

The next day, the old man drove them to the nearest train station and booked both of them a ticket to Seoul. They waved the man goodbye, and head into the train.
