Once in a Nightlight

Chapter 1

Toothless couldn't believe it, not one bit. His rider, Hiccup, had left him to go and start a new life with Luna, the Lightfury.

This was a big step in leaving the only home he had known with the boy who had gave him a family and most importantly, a friend. It's a struggle. Everything in life is. It's like being a mama bird and watching your chicks who were once hatchlings leave the nest.

But this was the young Nightfury's chance to show he was much more than a soft fed companion to a scrawny viking human. This was his chance to gain back his natural instincts, to live with the mate he loved so dearly and to maybe, just maybe...Start a family of his own. Oh imagine, how adorable baby Toothless's would be? The big eyes...Small little noses...Stubby little paws that would be so soft on the ground?...- Sorry, I'm getting carried away..hehe...

So..We begin the story over a vast ocean with broken and ancient shipwrecks that had collided into rough rocks along the sandy shore lines. The sky as grey as the hair on Gothi's head that swarmed over the two furies leading the whole Dragon flock towards the 'End of the World'. Toothless led his kind from the front so he knew where he was going to take them, Luna was at the back checking for any danger that could ambush them from behind. The young Nightfury continued to fly on and on but they were still a few hours, maybe a day or two from the place they call The Hidden World.

A few of the dragons moaned and complained that they had been flying for hours, which wasn't entirely true..Toothless had to take breaks between 3-4 hours of flying.

"It's been an hour!" The Alpha hissed behind him to a group of dragons dragging and lazing behind him as they continued to whine and complain

"It's been far longer than that.." Stormfly murmured softly to him as she kept her tone gentle,

"No it hasn't, all together, yes it has. But we took a break an hour ago, remember?" Toothless echoed against the rough wind that suddenly ricocheted them all in the face as they flew forward, one of the Zipplebacks almost lost their control and spiralled towards the ocean metres below them "Hold your balance, everyone, we'll get through this wind."

"But if it get too bad for you and or for us, we're taking a break on a small island for the night." Stormfly smiled cheekily to her friend before lifting her wings to give her a little push back. Toothless couldn't be mad at her, instead giving her a soft chuckle and a playful roll of his emerald eyes.

"Alright alright, understood."

The wind got worse. It turned into a mighty storm with thunder that roared above their scaled heads and lightning that clashed and collided with the water's surface. Toothless told them to hold on just a little more as they flew into an army of dark clouds that devoured them into the misty fog that blinded them for a few seconds.

"Toothless! I can't see anything!" Stormfly yelled from behind him..Somewhere. Everyone was swallowed up by the fog that even when the Alpha turned to see his flock, nothing was there but the fluffy clouds.

"Stormfly? Stormfly! Where are you guys!?" Toothless screeched out in panic as he frantically flew around in search for everyone. The Nightfury slammed into Hookfang who had ignited his body like a beam for the others to see and immediately fly to.

"Thanks Hookie." Toothless purred softly as Cloudjumper emerged and thrashing his wings violently against the thick cloud, blowing most of it away so the others could see Hookfang's light easier "Thanks, Cloud...Now, c'mon, let's go find a place to spend for the night shall we?"

A cacophony of 'Hurrahs'! and 'Finally!' echoed throughout the desolate sky as the Alpha let out his mighty roar that shook the clouds as he dived down followed by his flock. Toothless glided over the water, dipping his wing tip in with a small smile and a soft sigh, he missed Hiccup terribly...But he knew he had more in life than sitting at the feet of a Viking and obeying orders.

"Tooth?" Luna came from besides him, unsheathing herself from her disguise.

"You don't need to disguise yourself anymore, Luna.." Her mate chuckled "You're safe."

"I know, I know, but it was easier, and its a sort of thing I do when I want to get somewhere." The Lightfury chuckled to him softly as she came up against his side, the two bodies almost touching but not quite, otherwise they would go tumbling into the frigid water below them. Luna saw his expression, it was blank and almost crestfallen as he stared into the illuminated sea.

"You miss him, don't you?"

"Mh...yeah...a little..."

"Hey...C'mon, it's going to be okay, you have me now and all of your tribe with you. Trust me, Toothless, this is going to be the best life you could ever wish for." Luna gave his side a soft nudge and placed a lick on his dark scales "You're going to be okay...Everything will be, you'll be able to connect to your wild roots again.."

"I guess that's another way of seeing it.." The Alpha smiled faintly as he looked to his mate that smiled back at him "Thank you, Luna."

"Anytime.." The young female gave her mate another lick before she double-barrel-span upwards and dived through the sky, towards the back of the flock again .

Toothless was left alone with his thoughts, travelling back to his past but not far enough to a baby again...Where he lost his tail-fin, where his freedom was taken by a simple act of selfishness, an act by a boy he called his best friend, an act he thought would make him fit in and be like everybody else.

Finally, after some deep thought the alpha had found a place for him and his flock to rest for a night.

"Alright guys, pick your spots, we're staying here for the night."
