So, in this book, all people have something called a heartbeat. It's what keeps people alive. This part is just so you understand the whole "heartbeat" concept. The characters already know how it works so it just as fair that you know.
• If you kill someone, they turn into a ghost. This happens because you just killed their body, not their heartbeat
• you can give your heartbeat to someone if they just died or lost theirs and they live but then you die
• the older you get, the weaker your heartbeat gets. (Everyone's heartbeat stops at age 90)
• if you have a baby with someone, the baby takes half of each parent's heartbeat, and the parents then die 10 years early. (You can only get pregnant once, and twins can't happen)
