VFX Evolution

Baabhubali, Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Krrish, Avatar, and Fan. What is common to them all? Yes, they are all action movies. And each and every one of them has some very stunning Visual Effects!

Visual Effects or VFX is a visually appealing enhancement, incorporated into movie scenes during post-production. Computer software and other multimedia channels are used to generate this VFX.

However, it would be wrong to say that VFX can be found only in action movies. They are very much a part of all kinds of films, television serials and even advertisements. Though this technology has come to the forefront only in recent times, VFX has been around since the birth of the film industry. It exists in the early black-and-white and Technicolor movies of Hollywood. We also had it in our own Indian blockbusters like Mughal-e-Azam, Sholay, Maya Bazaar and Pathala Bhairavi. What has actually changed is the evolution of this technology. With every new movie that is produced, movie-makers keep challenging the boundaries of what computer technology can achieve. Today, the VFX domain has become so technologically powerful that it has blurred the line between real and unreal, possible and impossible.

Scope of VFX

Before the VFX boom, the movie production team based their stories and screenplays on what was possible with the limited equipment and tools they had. That has now undergone a drastic 180 degree reversal. As Walt Disney rightly said – "If you can dream it, you can do it!" – so it is with VFX. If you can visualize a scene in your mind, you can bring it to the screen for your audience! This is the reason why, today, VFX is unabashedly used across all media platforms to create everything from 10-second ads to 3-hour movies.

Two core components of VFX are Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) and Special Effects (SFX). CGI is creating 3D objects and scenes on the computer and combining them with the actual movie footage. SFX includes make-up, special props, animatronics, robotics and pyrotechnic elements, which are used to add value to the production set.

Since the VFX field is so vast, there are ample career opportunities for anyone with a creative flair. As a beginner, you can even claim a pretty good pay package of INR 3.5 lakhs to INR 4.5 lakhs per annum. And the opportunity to learn more advanced VFX techniques that come with the job is quite priceless in climbing the creative hierarchy.
