KIRKLYNN !

january 18, 2019

—————

"hey, kirk?" one of my bestfriends, virginia, said as she walked into my room. i sat up from my bed and closed my laptop.

"what's up?" i asked her.

"so, uh, i got invited to this party tonight!" she said with a huge smile on her face.

"that's great, nia! isn't that like, your first party in la?" i asked her.

"well, yeah! it's going to be our first party and i—"

"wait, our? what do you mean?"

"they said i could bring a plus one! and since miya and bella went back to washington for the weekend i don't have anyone to go with!" virginia said with worried eyes as she walked closer to my spot on the bed.

i sighed and tightened the elastic rubber band that was holding my hair in a ponytail.

"look, kirk, i know parties aren't really your thing, but it's la! think about all the people we could meet!" she took a few more steps and sat next to me on my bed.

"think about it! you could try talking to people and promoting your new single! it's pretty dope, i bet everyone will love it!" virginia tried to convince me.

"i don't know—"

"do you really want me going to a party alone?"

"no, but—"

"kirklynn, please!"

"ugh, fine! just stop whining!"

she threw her arms around my body and stood up from my bed.

"start getting ready now! we can leave in about an hour!" she told me right before walking out of my room with a smile on her face.

———

i walked out of my room, and headed to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water.

"you ready to go?" virgina walked up behind me and grabbed her jacket from the counter.

"yeah, i guess," i said with an over-exaggerated frown.

"oh, don't give me that face! your going to have a lot of fun! trust me!" she tried to convince me again.

"whatever makes you happy, nia," i gave her a small smile and we walked out of the apartment to the uber she called.

after a few moments, we arrived at the place the party was being held at.

"this is the place? are you sure?" i stared at the house with wide eyes.

"positive!"

we walked in, and a wave of heat crashed over me. i crunched my nose in disgust, "haven't been to one of these in about three years."

"are you gonna be good on your own for a bit?" virgina turned and asked me.

"what? virgina, i—"

"great! i'll text you!" she gave me a smile before running over to one of the girls she models with.

i sighed, and looked around.

there were people talking and laughing. music was being played very loudly, although i couldn't tell who was singing.

i headed to the kitchen, my stomach feeling empty.

when i found the kitchen, there were only a few people in there. a couple who were pretty drunk standing next to one of the counters, and a girl around my age sitting at the island alone.

i walked up to her, "is this seat taken?" i gestured to the seat next to her.

"no, my friend ditched me to hang out with a guy, so i'm pretty much alone for the night," the girl said.

"me too! my friend dragged me here and then left me for her other friends so i'm just hanging by myself for a while."

"i'm caysen," the girl introduced herself.

"i'm kirklynn," i said.

"so, kirklynn, are you from la?" caysen asked me.

"actually, no. a few of my friends and i are from washington, but we all decided to move out to la. two of them went back to washington for the weekend which left me alone with my other friend that dragged me here," i explained.

"oh, i've always wanted to go to washington! i've been living in los angeles my whole life, and i've only traveled to san francisco and oregon when i was really little," caysen told me.

"yeah, i've been to oregon a few times, it's really lovely there!"

"yeah, it is."

"so what do you like to do?" i asked her.

"um, i like to take pictures! and i like to read books, i also like to surf in the summer," she told me.

i nodded, "thats so cool! i've actually been needing to find a photographer to take pictures of me, how much do you charge?"

"well, i'm just starting out, so maybe only like, fifty for twenty five shots? and if i grow more then i'll do different things," she told me.

"okay, that's great! when are you free?" i asked her.

"how about tuesday?" caysen asked me.

i thought to myself for a bit, "that works with me! here," i pulled out my phone from my pocket and went to add a new contact.

"put your number in," i gave her my phone. she quickly typed in her number and handed me back my phone. i put my phone back in my jean pocket.

i glanced over at the cup in front of caysen, my curiosity growing, "what's in the cup?"

"oh, just coke, i'm only eighteen," she told me. "oh that's cool, i'm nineteen."

"what do you like to do?" she asked me.

"well, i'm in los angeles for music, but when i was in high school i played volleyball. it was fun, but i would rather sing than play a sport."

"wow, you're lucky you have any athletic ability at all, i'm surprised i even know how to surf and skate," she laughed.

i laughed with her, "i wasn't really that great, i just played because i needed the p.e. credit and then my friends told me to stay in it so i ended up playing for four years."

"that's cool," she said. she pulled out her phone from her jacket pocket and unlocked it.

"oh, my friend just told me that she was going to leave now, looks like i have to go too. it was good meeting you, kirklynn!" she said before walking away.

well, great. now i'm alone at a house party.
