Gabrielle

Late September, 2011

I'm quiet you know

You make a first impression

I've found I'm scared to know

I'm always on your mind

I puffed up my hair one last time in the mirror, before answering my ringing phone. “Hello?”

“Gabrielle? Hello darling, it’s Anya.”

“Hi,” I said to my manager. “What’s up, we’re about to start shooting any minute.”

“Oh, yes. The Farah shoot. Well then, call me when you’re leaving or first thing in the morning. I have an audition that seems right up your alley. A musical for the Disney Channel.”

“Sounds great, thank you. I’ll call you as soon as I can.” I pressed the off button and threw my phone into my bag with the rest of my things. The shoot was running super late, and this was the last, and most important scene in the video. I was lucky enough to be chosen out of all the girls who auditioned, and I was going to make sure that I shined. Farah, a new British pop-star, had personally chosen to feature me. I would get to dance in the concert scene at the end. Unfortunately, it meant I had an awful outfit to wear.

Farah describes herself as “Avril Lavigne meets Lights.” Which meant that her music video was very grunge rock and roll. I was sporting crazy puffy 80’s hair. I seriously looked like Jessie Spanno from Saved By the Bell- but worse. I had this cropped leather jacket with Gaga-esque shoulder pads and weird metal studs and spikes. A poofy black tutu went with the jacket, and to top it off, some black and forest green Supras. I looked like I was raised by the Osbornes. Farah was dressed similarly- British flag tank over a fishnet top, a shorter black tutu and knee-high fringed boots. Her focus was on her crazy red eye make-up. She looked like Tim Burton’s version of a high school cheerleader. Then again, she kind of acted that way as well.

“Gabrielle! Are you ready to rock this? I have a surprise for you!”

I smiled at the popstar, trying not to show her how utterly exhausted I was. “Surprise?”

“Yes! You know how the concept for this part is that you’ve got to get my boyfriend to dance to my singing? And then you end up stealing him and walking off together in the end?”

“Er, yes.” I’d forgotten that it was a break-up song. For one night only, boyfriend stealing was totally my thing. Or at least, that’s how I had to act.

“Well, I called in a personal favor! So you get to steal Liam Payne! He agreed to play the boyfriend in this part! He and I are going to film all our sections tomorrow since we’ve run so late, but he came in to film the ending with you.”

“Awesome.” I said, forcing a smile. I was a little worried that Liam was going to be intimidating. I’d seen pictures of his body, and he’d been with his last girlfriend, Anne, for a long time. I wasn’t sure if she would be here, but I’d heard that she was sort of a diva. She could only get small roles in films, but thought she was God’s gift.

“Don’t worry, he and Anne are totes over! So no butterflies about kissing him. I was worried about that too!”

“Great, maybe we should start filming?” Farah smiled, and bounced over to the set, pulling me along.

“Liam, meet Gabrielle. Gabrielle is the one you’re going to be dancing with!”

“Nice to meet you!” he said. His whole face lit up, and his eyes formed little tiny slits. I couldn’t help but smile back; his was contagious. “I can’t wait to get started!”

We filmed through the scene a few times before the director decided he had what he needed. As soon as I could, I ran backstage so I could change back into more comfortable clothes, AKA baggy sweatpants, a cami, and flip flops. One of the perks of being in LA was that I could wear just about anything and be comfortable, even in the fall.

I reached into my bag and started digging for my cell phone and car keys. It was only 9:30, so if I hurried, I could still reach Anya.

“Oof!” I exclaimed, as I hurried right into a very solid person.

“Woah! I’m sorry!” Liam exclaimed, cupping my thin shoulders in his broad hands in an effort to stabilize us both.

“No, my fault, I wasn’t looking where I was going. I’m sorry, Liam.”

“Well, have a good night, Gabrielle. Hopefully we get a chance to work together again in the future?”

“Yeah maybe. Who knows, my next music video audition could be one of yours!” I said, smiling. Liam responded with his contagious smile again, and gave me a quick hug before disappearing outside into the darkness.
