PROLOGUE

My younger sister,Hope, excitedly watches the screen. I am only half interested. I have never liked the Hunger Games as much as my family. They love to place bets on who will win, who will die first. They love to watch as tributes beg for life, love to watch the bloodbath of the Cornucopia, love to watch as tributes duel fiercely. They love these games. But I believe they are brainwashed by the Ministry of Magic. They think this okay, to have teenagers fight to the death.

"Layne! Layne!" my sister yells, "Did you see that?! Did you see that?"

"No," I tell her, but I hear the sound of a cannon through the TV, and know she has just witnessed a death. I cringe on the inside, but go back to reading my spell book. Hope continues to study the screen, getting so excited large purple bubbles burst from her wand. My mother comes in and converses with my sister about what just happened. I hear Hope say, "What if that was Layne, mommy? What if?!"

"Well," my mother replies slowly, "I would place a big bet on her, because I know she would win." She smiles at me, and I force one back.

My sister could've been called a fortune teller right then, for exactly that happened one year later.
