September 4, 2011

I'm eating a small chicken patty sandwich and a cup of hot tea in a soup kitchen in a big city. I'm in New York if you're wondering.

A familiar face sits across from me, Troian, a girl I sometimes see in odd parts of the city.

"Hey Viola."

I smile, she's use to my silence.

After eating silently for a few moments I say, "Have you seen Amy recently?"

She shakes her head, "No, not for a few weeks. I thought she was with you. She said she was going to stay in some shelter with you for a week or two."

I shake my head, "Troian I haven't seen her since the beginning of the month."

Her eyes widen and she gulps, "They got her then."

I nod, "I guess so."

We sit silently then, knowing we aren't going to see our common friend again, and after this we probably will never see each other appart from the occassional glance from across the street.

I'm sitting on the sidewalk strumming at an old guitar I had found when someone goes to throw a newspaper away. His name is Daniel. I occassionaly see him around, usually buying coffee. He always gives me his change, and sometimes he even buys me food.

Today I've arrived after him though, so no food.

He smiles, "Hey Viola. Want the papaer?"

I nod and chirp, "Sure."

He hands it to me and I read the date on the top, "It's Wednesday?"

He nods, "Yeah, nothing too interesting in today's world except for an article on the mayor's missing daughter."

I gulp and refuse to meet his eyes, "Oh. How old is she?"

He shrugs, "Just turned seventeen. I guess she's been missing for a year."

"That's sad."

He nods, "Yeah it is. And the only picture they have of her is of when she was a kid. Not even current. Doesn't sound like they want to find her."

I shrug, "She's probably dead."

He nods, "Yeah probably."

I flip open the sudoku and dig into my bag for my pen, "So what are you doing today Dan?"

He shrugs, "Heading to work. Hey I know someone who's having a Halloween bash and you're more than welcome to come."

I frown, "When is it?"

"The twenty-ninth. Next Saturday. How about you meet me here at say...two and we can find you and outfit. How about it?"

I shrug, "Sure. But don't be surprised if I forget."

He grins, "I'll remind you next week. I gotta go Viola. Remember, next week."

I nod as he head off and wait until I see him cross the street before opening the paper to the article about the mayors daughter.

I frown at the image as I read the name, Violet Duke.

I pityed the name.

I hated it.

Daniel surely enough found me outside the coffee shop the other day, and I actually meet him today. He picks up my bag and leads me down the road and across the street. Then into a Halloween shop.

"Pick something. My friend owns this place for the season."

"You sure?" I ask.

He nods, "Of course Viola. Go on."

I end up being the queen of hearts from Alice in Wonderland. The sexy one of course.

Daniel is curteous and let's me change at his apartment. He's dressed as Zorro. Totally cheesy. But hey, that's Halloween in NYC.

Roaming through the party I find Troian dressed up as a bunny. I giggle at her outfit, "Babe you look adorable," I coo.

She slaps my arm and grins, "Shut up miss queen of hearts."

We giggle over our outfits for about ten minutes before finding a table full of alcohol.

You'd think being homeless I would have been a little curious as to why so many men came dressed in masks that night. You think living in a city like NYC I'd be a little curious as to why only the girls touched the table full of drinks.

It never crossed my mind.

It should have.

But it never did.

Vote. Comment. Fan.

I'd love some feedback.
