She woke up to the scraping sound again. Naturally, she couldn't just roll over, drape her pillow over her ear and go back to sleep. So she just lay there staring at the play of moonlight on her ceiling in frustration. For the past three days, she had been waking up to the stupid sound. It was annoying. She couldn't get as much sleep as she wanted because it was always hard for her to fall asleep and since she was a very light sleeper, tiny sounds like this always worsened things.
So this night, she decided not to just go downstairs and look around, she decided to go outside. Her intention was to check the area directly under her room window, thinking it was probably an animal- most likely a rabbit- that was making its home there. She tossed her blanket aside and slipped into her soft night slippers then walked out of the room and made for the stairs, careful not to wake her aunt and her cousins as she walked by their rooms. As she got there, from a few feet away, she noticed that the earth under the window looked as though it had been dug up. She smiled wryly thinking her suspicions had been confirmed. On getting closer though, she realised that it didn't look like what an animal had dug. More like what a human had. As she was trying to process that fact, she heard the bush behind her rustle and turned.
"You should have just stayed inside like you've been doing for the past three days" the person she saw standing there said.
"Adele?" She managed to say despite her shock. "What are you...?" She began before another figure appeared behind Adele. Adele sniffed.
"You really should've stayed inside..."
